I was wondering if anyone has ever tried playing Telepong? Telepong was written in 1977-78 during completion of the ROM code for the Apple II Communication Card to demonstrate how the card could be used. The Telepong program is written entirely in Integer Basic using the Communication Card, there are no special machine language routines needed to make the game work. The Communication Card code could allow the Apple II to be a Dumb Terminal or a Remote Computer or Serial Printer with the ability to switch modes remotely which is a lot of stuff for 256 bytes. Andy Hertzfeld said it was the tightest code he had ever seen and one of the reasons he came to Apple was that he wanted to go where they wrote code like that. In about 2000 Telepong was used as a prior art exhibit in a patent case on “Video Game Networking”.

I have made a demonstration video that can be seen at:

I have attached an original Telepong audio file and a Telepong Demo audio file that will auto play for demos. The programs can be run from Disk but the program uses PR# and IN# directly so executing the programs without modification will disable
DOS.

Very nice video!

Thanks for that.

If I have a bit of time I will try to set this up - have an original communication card and two Hayes Micromodem II - maybe I'm able to set this up via the Hayes.

I think you'd have to make some changes since the MicroModem likely talks to the Apple in a different way.

Re: Apple II Telepong

Telepong does not require an original Communications Card to play, it works with the Super Serial Cards too, but it's a nice to use of the original boards.
