Apple IIe w. Uthernet II card - ADTPro system hang

Dear folks,

I'm using a Uthernet II card installed at slot 7 of my Apple IIe which works fine with Contiki.
When using ADTPro and selecting the (E)thernet connection the system seems to start loading the necessary bin file

"STARTING ADTPROETH.BIN ..."

and after some seconds Drive 2 starts spinning and stopping but then the system hangs.

I tried ADTPro version 2.0.1 from the ADT sourceforge resource... Drive 2 doesn't stop spinning and the system hangs.
Using ADTPro version 2.0.1 from the a2retrosystems page... Drive 2 starts and stops spinning but the system hangs, too.

ADTPro works fine when I'm using the Apple (S)erial connection via my SSCard.

Does anyone have any idea to solve this behaviour?

Re: Apple IIe w. Uthernet II card - ADTPro system hang

Okay... I just did some extended testing and started to remove cards out of my Apple IIe.
The 128KB memory card removal, positioned at slot 1, solved the seen issue.
It's a 128KB Saturn Card Memory clone, while testing the card itself doesn't show any issue.
But having this removed to use Uthernet II with ADTPro shouldn't be the solution, right Wink

Also I'm not sure while Drive 2 motor starts spinning and stops after a while when using the ADTPRO 2.0.1
version from Sourceforge. Using Glenn's ADTPRO 2.0.1 version, here the floppy motor from Drive 2 doesn't
stop spinning.

So I just informed Glenn (a2retrosystems) and David (ADTPro sourceforge) about this behaviar and
hope they will find a solution that allows me to use my 128KB card.

Again... using Contiki and entering the card slot position works for me, also with the 128KB card installed.

Beside my next observation.

Having the 128KB Memory card removed I was able to do the configuration. Then I thought... okay the configuration is stored now... let's re-insert the card. I then started the Uthernet II supporting ADTPro version. When selecting the (E)thernet the normal message "STARTING....." appears, Drive 2 doesn't start spinning anymore but the system hangs again.

I didn't have the exact same symptoms, but close. Did you check out the last couple messages in this thread?

Hi Skip,

yes I did. I'm in contact with Glenn from a2retrosystems and with David (ADTPro). David already answered but because of he doesn't have a Saturn 128KB card nor a clone he might not be able to test.

Let's see if Glenn will be able to find a solution.

Thanks

Re: Apple IIe w. Uthernet II card - ADTPro system hang

I wonder if its got something to do with the fact that the Saturn 128 card is actually 8 banks of 16k and was originally designed with the
II and II+ in mind.
We are talking about a model of Apple II the card was not originally designed for and another interface card and software that was created long after then end of the Apple II line.

I have a couple Saturn 128s, but they are both in Apple II+ machines and I do not use the Uthernet or ADT.

Just wondering if the way the banks of RAM on the card are utilized is the issue.

From the Saturn Manual: "The 64K and 128K Ram boards are compatible with software designed to run with Apple's Language Card (PASCAL, FORTRAN, LISA ver 2, etc.) as well as Microsoft's RamCard and Z80 Softcard (CP/M, COBOL-80, FORTRAN-80, etc.). This compatibility is possible due to its unique organization. The boards consist of 16K banks of memory (4 banks for the 64K board, 8 banks for the 128K) , accessed one at a time. In this sense, the Saturn 64K or 128K board can be thought of as several 16K Ram boards occupying the same slot. The first of these 16K banks is controlled through software in exactly the same manner as Apple' s Language Card and other 16K memory cards. As a result, existing software designed to run with the 16K memory boards and Apple Language Card will operate on the Saturn 64K or 128K board without modification . "

Mmmhhhh...

well the Saturn Testsoftware works fine on the card. So all banks seems to be okay.
Also CP/M is running on my system together with my Z80 card which needs more memory.

Maybe there is some adress conflict, because when the 128KB card is installed, the second Drive of my DuoDisk starts spinning when ADTPROETH.BIN is starting to be loaded. After some seconds it stopps spinning.

The interesting part is... when I use the ADTPRO system, supplied by a2retrosystems and which supports the new Uthernet II card, the Drive doesn't stop spinning.

As I'm not a programmer nor familiar with the Apple IIe schematics... it could be an adressing or interrupt issue.

Remember... Contiki works fine... and I do believe Contiki as well as ADTPro are using the IP65 stack
