Apple IIgs monitor only displaying a single horizontal line

I've already searched the forum to no avail, and I don't know the first thing to start troubleshooting this problem. The IIgs itself works fine through composite out, but the RGB monitor only displays this solitary horizontal line. I just acquired the monitor last month and have been waiting on a cable which just arrived today, so I have no idea if it's the monitor, or the cable, or something else entirely.

Help is definitely appreciated, haha. Thanks!

There's no vertical deflection meaning that you or someone will have to open this monitor and fix it with a soldering iron. I have seen reports of this problem come up before.

Try not to keep this monitor on for very long until it gets fixed as you'll be wearing out that part of the phosphor screen.

Thanks! I'll see what I can do and hopefully report back with success Smile

UPDATE

M'kay, thanks to your confirmation on the monitor being at fault, I did some further Googling and found this link mentioning the HV module having bad solder connections.

So I removed the solder there and cleaned up the contacts. I also noticed some corrosion on other contacts, so I desoldered those just to be thorough. Did some resoldering and boom, monitor works great!! Here's some pictures...

Desoldered HV module
Corrosion?
Good as new!

Phew. I would have documented this more thoroughly but I was eager to try and get this working. I've been waiting too long without one of these monitors Tongue Hopefully this is helpful to someone in the future. Big thanks, Dog Cow!!

Corrosion? Essentially yes. Dissimilar metals, voltage & power, impurities in the solder.. Connections gonna break down!

Good to know! I've never seen that before. Still fairly inexperienced with soldering and all that fun stuff Smile

Im new to soldering too! I just recapped my monitor and resoldered all those HV connections too... Those joints are always cracked it seems...
