Asimov Apple II collection size (silly question, probably)?

Hey, all. I downloaded the 25 GB ZIP file of the ASIMOV Apple II archive off of the Internet Archive. When I go to unzip it, Windows 7 tells me I need 734 PB (as in petabytes, no, that's not a typo) of space to extract it all. Am I doing something horribly wrong, or is this really compressed at a 29.3 million to 1 ratio?

Silly Windows... :ebc:

7-Zip is crunching it now. Good to see I'm not going insane, lol.

BTW, who exactly runs that site? I'm not seeing who to thank for the obscene number of hours compiling all that stuff.

Hello bobclark86,
up to my knowledge asimov was run in former days ( about a decade ago ) by a person
named asimov. Later that site was running by an agreement running with heritage agreement.
Nowadays it´s running and serviced by a agreement with apple web ring and associated
persons within the group of running mirror sites. Maybe other members here have more detailed
and precise info on the topic... anyhow the previous owner and creator of the site ( up to my knowledge )
has passed away - so the thank will be a bit late....

unfortunately several other websites are also fighting on survival and preservation of the
heritage of Apple related stuff (see some threads here related to heritage of Apple stuff...)
some are still running on that task.... i am for example still scanning each year several hundreds of pages
related to the 70´s and 80´s..... last year i scanned and uploaded the entire bunch of british user magazins
Windfall from 1979 to 1986....
at the moment i´m still scanning the entire User Magazins from AUGE
( Apple User Group Europe - German edition from 1978 till 1986 )
and within my private Archive ( up to the moment more than 300 GB harddisk space
is crowded with 288 GB used space )...

Hi Bob,

where is the 25G ZIP file located?

I can only see individual file and folders?

I'm ftp'ing to:

ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/

Cheers, Martin...

aha, Don't worry I found it at The Internet Archive as per the original question relating to the archive size.

Sorry for the bump, but the uncompressed asimov ftp archive as of today is over 27GB, and 150GB if including magazine/ad/manual/etc scans, and emulator packs which likely contain duplicates of game disks
Quite a few new images have been added by "4am"/others since the archive.org date of 2013

You should bear in mind that this archive is dynamic and not static !

Every month guys add content by uploading stuff from their own contents to
that archive.... and you should also bear in mind, that it´s not the only archive...

there are 10 major sites that contain former Apple stuff - and they also move in some cases
contents between each other - if one of the other sites is more specialized to
the topic of uploaded stuff....

to see the entry point of all archives use this link:
http://mirrors.apple2.org.za/

Not to forget the fact that even nowadays less than 30% of the total contents and knowledge
has been uploaded....

Just for example:
In my private archive ( more than 300 GB uncompressed ) only about 45% of the content is availiable
in that public archives.... and in my storage there are still nearly 20 large transportation boxes
full with books, circuitplans, harddisks full with text from former BBS systems, Disks etc. and other stuff
waiting to become scanned, converted and made availiable to nowadays systems ( by for example
converting the scanned magazin pages to PDF-Files or similar procedures or generating DSK-image files )....

and finally to spot out the topic of this thread:
the internet archive revisits the asimov site every few months again for a day and takes a "snapshot"
of the current status of asimov.... so that ZIP-file is only representing the content at that specific day !
