That's an Apple PlainTalk microphone and it will only work with AV Macs and with Power Macs. It will not work with every Mac, nor will it work with other computers or equipment, as you say in your description.

I'm not sure that is entirely true... I even tested the unit on a IBM/Lenovo laptop line-in point and it seemed to pick up voice??? So, how could it not work with say a Macintosh LC 575 or LC III, or any other Mac that has mic-in/line-in point?
