HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B In a eMac will not burn to DVD+R

Hi all,

Can anyone definitively tell me if this drive can burn to a blank DVD+R? I am getting the impression it wants DVD-R's only. If I put in a blank CDR, I have no issues and the drive see's the disc. If I put in a blank DVD+R, it just ejects the drawer. This is the info I received on the drive from system profiler, which leads me to believe a DVD+R should work.

HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B:

Firmware Revision: C03D
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

As you can see, under DVD-Write, it says it can burn DVD+R, but as I said above will not accept a disk.

Does anyone have this drive and burn DVD+R's? I have tons of them to use. If I can only burn DVD-R's I'll go out and buy some.

Thanks!

Looks like Apple released a firmware update for that drive at some point:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/SuperDrive_Firmware_Update

It just says it's to improve reliability, but who knows exactly what that means. If you haven't applied the update, might not be a bad idea.

The specs for that drive do indicate it's capable of burning both DVD-R and +R media, so if the firmware update doesn't help, then it sounds like it's either a hardware problem or the drive just doesn't like the particular +R media you're using (for whatever reason).

Thanks for the response.

I did try to apply that update, and the update said that it was not needed. I am using verbatim media. I will try something different Smile

A lot of my older Mac DVD burners--like the ones in my Quicksilvers--started being very fickle about media, so I simply use a firewire burner. I've pulled burners out of PC's and they've all worked with Leopard. Anything older than Leopard you might need to use Patchburn, but some burners might not work at all. If I remember correctly, replacing a DVD drive in an eMac is a bitch, so I'd go with a drive in a firewire case.

Guys,

I tried different brands of DVD's.. No go. I was going to try a firewire usb burner like you used, but low and behold my burner started reading any blank DVD disk I put in it AFTER I turned my emac upside down to do a memory upgrade, then put it back down. I'm not sure if there was something lodged in there or what, but thanks to the memory upgrade it's reading any blank media I put in, CD and DVD. *keeping fingers crossed it stays that way*

Thanks Smile
