I just got my first apple ][ computer, and got a lot good help here from my first posting about it. but now I'm very frustrated in how to install ADTPro on my WIn7 x64 machine to get some dos files to the apple.
I downloaded the 2.0 version. unpacked it and there in no Install or setup file.
I read the readme and it says I have to have something from Java install. I opened a CMD window and entered at the \windows\sytem32 prompt java -veresion and I get the 'Java is not a recognized command". SO I read further and the readme says I need to install a Java server JRE program. I follow the links and get the file, unpack it and there is no install or setup file. on the java download page the installation instructions link is broken. Googleing leads me to cryptic pages that I need to be a java programmer to understand, which I'm not.
I was hoping for a simple turnkey option to get this apple up and running.
Any help out there for me???
Thanks

In 64 bit systems I have found that you have to install both the 64 bit version of Java and the 32 bit version as well. I believe that to install Java, you need to use your browser. By that, I mean the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer. Maybe there is a YouTube tutorial on how to install Java...

Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDTa2U50bWY

To verify that Java is installed, go to this webpage and click on the red button which says, "Verify Java Version" then your computer will popup a gray window which will say, "Do you want to run this application?" (Name: Java Detection Publisher: Oracle America, Inc.) bla bla bla...

That's the best I can do my friend. If this doesn't work then you can always go to Home Depot and buy a hammer.

Thanks a lot!! Very helpful. I never use IE so I never needed to install Java there. YOur instructions were more then helpful!!!!!
It WORKS!!
kind of.
I get the program running, but it does not see my serial port under serial config menu. Comms dropdown there is blank. In Win7 Device manager it shows as comm4 and working properly. In ADTpro I click on the serial button on the main screen, I get 'There are no serial ports or the serial library RXTX in not installed or visible'. Is this a x86 vs x64 problem? Oh, the serial port does work for other 8-bit computer applications.
Suggestions?
Thanks again!!!

You will need to uninstall 32-bit java (if you installed it). You only want the 64-bit version; otherwise ADTPro will not be able to see your COM4. You will need to be careful with automatic installers from browsers - they typically don't pick the right bit width for you, and you end up in situations like you are in now, unfortunately.

I have been using ADTPro since version 1.1.9 which was around 2011. In all that time I have NEVER had a problem detecting a serial port.

What is going on? I have NEVER heard of this issue??!!??!!

It has coincided with "automatic" install of Java from Oracle. It typically fails to detect that you actually have 64-bit Widows, so it installs 32-bit Java. My ADTPro script (correctly) detects 64-bit Windows, and tries to link with 64-bit DLLs to detect ports. If a user has carefully installed Java, there's no problem. If there's a mismatch, there's a problem. Just check the support discussion for "no serial ports..."

http://sourceforge.net/p/adtpro/discussion/support/thread/2133500f/

It's become a fairly common problem lately, so I've learned to check bit width first when people complain about missing COM ports on Windows.
