Interesting Apple II (S/N 5)

Interesting unit. The logic board and power supply have obviously been replaced. But the case lack vents common to later units. The serial number tag might've been pulled and reapplied. Keyboard appears to be consistent with a unit of that vintage.

The shot of RF modulator appears to have vent hole above it but other photos do not. In the same photo the velcro stub on the lower case appear to be flush but other photos shows it as not. This listing looked suspicious.

The Monitor IIe is interesting too; it has an amber tube inside a unit clearly marked as being green phosphorous.

Woah your right! Look at the bottom mounting tray in that same picture as well, it's an unpainted RFI style tray. Maybe the seller mixed the pictures up with another computer?

Too bad this computer does not have the original power supply & motherboard; if the serial # is real it would be a great collectors piece.

I asked the seller about the Apple II and its sounding like a FrankinApple II. It doesn't look like the complete original RAM either.

Wow you guys are sure eagle-eyed!

Looks like someone asked the seller about the Sup R Mod/case with vents and he admitted it was taken from another later case.

Also does anybody know if the serial number label is supposed to be facing that direction? All the ones I've seen are the other way around. (Course I've never seen anything near that old before...)

They also replaced the lid, which is why it really doesn't match color-wise to the rest of the unit.

the floppy ribbon cable (barely seen in pic) is gray not multi-colored
the updated pic does look like the case is painted, so that looks correct

also using this one as a basis http://www.seattleretrogamer.com/2013/07/place-your-bets-on-this-apple-ii.html

the label does look upside down.

I sent the seller some more questions.

I'm pretty sure I've seen other very old labels upside down, but not commonly. As was noted at some point on Facebook by somebody, this label at least, probably the machine, is the one shown in Welcome to Macintosh about 14-17 minutes in. Looks the same, label is just as upside down in the movie as well. Given to Team/FirstTech at the rollout of the Apple II.

That does appear to be the same machine. But all the buyer is going to get here is ser#5 base plate, partial case and keyboard. It's a shame the rest is missing.

The S/N (assuming people are not playing shell games) is in the range of nearly a million, so that is not unexpected.

I looked at it.
As soon as the seller said that different items were updated
I thought that there might be a fishy smell to the whole deal.

Why would an Apple II owner, knowing what he had (maybe?), make changes to
an original unit? Especially 00005?

I would not matter if it were operational or not.
That low a Serial Number I would have left as is.

I think that is why he has such a low Buy It Now price.

The auction originally had the picture below:

As I suspected, the seller admitted that they had mixed up the computers with a II+ unit they have in there inventory.

It sucks but it's true. This would have been an awesome piece if it was still all original. I love the old style silkscreen labeled power supplies; and this rev 0 computer would have certainly had one installed originally (or did they use different style power supplies this early in Apple II's?). I still wouldn't mind having that case & keyboard though!

Re: Interesting Apple II (S/N 5)

When I watched the video, on my 5" iPhone screen, it seemed like the later gold supply and II+ motherboard was there. I wasn't counting the modulator picture because someone said already it was wrong. I have made similar mistakes which is easy to do if your not careful and have a giant set of pictures. Now I'm more organized myself using tags to avoid the mix/match problem.

Btw, You can also see the "glue" residue on both the eBay pic and the video around the label. They appear identical.

Cheers,
Corey

Re: Interesting Apple II (S/N 5)

After watching the youtube video that has it in it(mentioned already in this thread), this unit was a demo unit at at the first Apple reseller, it probably spent a lot of time in the trunk or backseat being shown to customers.
It makes now sense now why it looks like it does. If only it could talk!

Team Electronics was my local Apple Dealer in Salem, Oregon..
That is where I bought ALL my Apple stuff, except for some Mail-order Items like Applied Engineering...

The Video is fantastic, The Story of how Team Electronics got it, the Apple Dealer Contract based on a Pioneer Electronics Dealer Contract..

The unit in the video is also missing the top cover and has the inverted serial number tag.

I would guess for Cooling, since there are no Vent Slots, and the Cases would Buckle from Heat... According to the Reports I have read...
