Joystick circuit - possibly stuck in 'down' position, iie enhanced

Hi

Ive long had troubles getting a particular joystick working on my iie enhanced (motherboard from a NTSC platinum iie enhanced inside a UK iie enhanced case, uk keyboard) and lo and behold ive just tried running the Bruce Lee game to find, with no joystick plugged in, that the bruce character is being held down in 'crouch' without any user input and without joystick even plugged in. I dont know what the keys for the game are but it seems unresponsive to any key.

the keyboard works in non-game use.

has anyone else seen this, is this indicative of a board fault?

up til now I blamed a dodgy joystick adaptor or the software but now think my iie has a fault. ideas welcome!

TIA, Iain

Bruce Lee Game demands presence of a working Joystick.

Additional info´s about gameport and possible joystick adaptors can be found at

excellent, thanks speedyG!

I had an adaptor cable I always suspected of not working right, purported to allow the use of a digital atari-style joystick on an apple ii. I just thought it was faulty.. so good news I hope on that front, time to read your link.

cheers all Smile

Hello Iain,

if you have viewed the gameport experimentals page you should have recognized that the Games expect a
analog joystick with potentiometers and won´t accept a digital joystick....

the reason is rather simple :

the software reads the analog value from game-inputs 0 to 3 and expect a value between
0 and 255 ( i.e. 1,2 Volt to 3,8 Volt ).

The digital ports are only used to recognize action at the fire buttons.
Atari digital joysticks instead send an amount of digital pulses that are counted.
In such a case you would need a special adaptor that is able to
convert a numbers of pulses to a analog value.

If you want to use a PC style joystick it´s obligatee to use a analog joystick.

The most adaptor cables only correct the pins by sorting them to the correct order
but have no conversion unit to transform digital pulseamount to analog signalvalue.

Some rathr important infos about the used potentiometers are at the very end of that page.
