Just bought my first Apple ///

Well, I can't ever win the lottery, but I managed to find my first Apple /// system

So here's the story. I left work at around 5:30pm today and was pretty tired and didn't want to do my monthly stop at the local goodwill computer store. Something told me I should stop. Traffic was snarled and it was not easy driving. So I made the turn and stopped.

Was looking around and found a few old powerbook power adapters (hockey puck style) and a power supply for a Macintosh Cube. They had some G3s. Nothing earth shattering.

I went over to the bins where the parts were because I was going to get another CF card reader since I just got my CFFA 3000 when there it was!!!

I looked up and saw it sitting there in all its glory. It appeared to be in pretty nice shape. Now I knew they were trying to put together a museum, but I had to ask the manager who I have somewhat became friends with (even though he could be my son). I said, "John. So I have to ask. Is the Apple /// for the museum or will you sell it to me." He said, "It is for the museum, but if you want it it's yours".

I asked what are you asking for it? He said "take a look at it and make me a fair offer".

I looked at it. It was in fairly nice shape. Missing one foot, external floppy drive, and monitor ///. I said how does $70.00 sound? He was shocked. He was thinking alot lower. He said how about $49.95? I said okay how about an even $50.00 (With senior discount I got it for $45.00)

Tomorrow, I will take it apart and see if it powers up. It looks like it has two expansion cards in it. Can't quite tell what they are but one looks like a parallel printer adapter.

I threw some pictures up here http://pitt.box.com/apple3.

I don't know much about the ///, but now I can learn since I have one. I hope it works.

I'll post more tomorrow.....

Thanks,
Jay

Damn Jay!

Exellent buy.
Looks to be in great condition.

Did you have to have your friend help you carry it to the car? lol

That is the only thing I don't like about the /// is the fact that they weigh a ton.

Steven,

Funny you should ask that. I just had gallbladder surgery two weeks ago and I actually had to get a shopping cart to haul it to the car. I didn't get a chance to look at it today, but plan on looking at it tomorrow. I will post more then.

I am pinching myself because I really can't believe it.

Well. I took it apart, cleaned it, put it back together and it works!!! The external drive works too.

I posted more pictures up on http://pitt.box.com/apple3.

It is very clean inside. Very little corrosion. I saw only a little on the connectors.

Screws etc. have none. Now I really can't believe it. I am the proud owner of an apple III.

Now I guess I got learn a little bit about it.

Re: Just bought my first Apple ///

Don't know if anyone here has any Apple III parts. I need a few things that are missing from the one I got.

I am missing one rubber foot. These are not like the IIe feet which I have a bunch of.

I am also missing the Apple Badge for external disk drive which I am sure is going to be really difficult to find.

Thanks,
Jay

John Woodall over at vintagemicros.com has at various times had all of these things. He is on eBay as 'vintagemicros' and I've bought the tall feet from him before - it's maybe 5 bucks for 2 or 4. You can find the original 3M bumpon parts out there in bulk, but I've found it more convenient to just buy from him.

Not this time Smile Ha Ha. On my way home from work.

Going down to see the mother-in-law over the Christmas holiday. I'll be keeping an eye out for another haul, but sometimes these only come around once.

Like I said, I can't hit the lottery....
