Re: THIS is Laughable!

I, too, had a near hysterical desire for a more advanced version of the II+ keyboard. Not for reliability or anything, but for the [] {} \ | / _ symbols for use in BBS programming! Making fancy spinning cursors and text "windows" and decorations and other embellishments like putting you name in a box at the top of the screen. When MouseText came out as part of the enhancement kit I was totally blown away!

I also wanted a type ahead buffer for the //e and was sorry to give it up when I finally upgraded. There were software solutions by that time, though none ever worked like the one in the Videx Enhancer ][ on my II+.

All in all I was more than happy with the 128K memory of the//e and being able to use that as a ramdisk for lightning fast user verification and storage of variables. Tradeoffs.. Tradeoffs..

@Steven:

Last time I bought an "ASCO" controller board I paid something like $50 for it. And I've seen couple move for around $70.00

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Keatah,

I have several in the stash that I bought for between $50.00
and $60.00 for last year.
When I was looking at the pictures of the one I posted,
I noticed a little something in the picture showing the
card in the anti-static bag.

A piece of shipping tape holding the bag closed.

That intimates to me that the card was at least
removed once from that bag, because if you remember
correctly, all the bags were sealed with a Warning Label
of some type.

This also makes me think that the card may have been used
and then placed back in the bag.

No matter...

I won't be bidding on it
as it is not "New" as far as I am concerned
and the card is not worth $200.00.

Just my opinion.

2. An ASCO Controller Card New In the Box (Not):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291719518760?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Why do you suspect this isn't new? Based on my experience, it looks like it's packed right, and the teeth show little to no wear (aside from the pre-ship test).

Oh, never mind... I see your reasoning in a follow-up. The tape you see on that bag is the correct tape for that era.

More than I'd spend, but I'm certain that is an unused card.

One of the reasons why I cut back on purchasing vintage things is the principle of the matter. The other reason being is my collection is rather complete.

Some of these sellers acquire the material for next to nothing or for free. From estates and recycling centers and other low-cost sources. Then they mark it up thousands of percents - so to speak - and wait for a flunky to buy it.

You can usually identify these sellers based on the non-tech description and their username and the volume of sales.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I have read a lot hear about people's ridiculous prices. Honestly, I find it hard to sell things at a reasonable price. Human psychology seems to dictate, if your item is much less then everyone else, then your item is less quality. If an item does not sell, I actually have better luck selling an item by increasing my price, then reducing it. I have an Apple IIe on eBay right now, I have only gotten one offer for $75. Its one of the nicest, and cheapest systems there. If I increase my price to $200+ I know I will get more watchers. Most of us know what a good price is. We will jump on something that is undervalued quickly. But most of us are not looking for the non-rare items. So, I'm thinking that people who don't know the price point, or the value of the item, just looks at the average price, and skip the cheap ones, thinking the price reflects the quality. Sorry to hijack the thread.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I'll always go with the cheaper item provided it isn't junk.

Sometimes watchers like to gawk and stare at things. And the more ridiculous an item is priced the more people are going to watch and see if it actually sells. I do that all the time.

It isn't a thread hijack, it's good to see what others are thinking. And good entertainment while we await the next ridiculous auction.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Hello Apple7159,

that´s not a hijack....

this is laughable is rather indefinite titel.....

it might be viewed as:
developement on marketprices and sales of ancient Apple II series and peripherials

and of course it´s a question of opinions....
what one may value as "rather correct price" another may value as a price from "other galaxy"....
and it also is a bit related to the question if an offer is legal or not.......

after all it just spots out current offers that might not be "that serious" valued within
the community ( and that is again a opinion ).....

just even trying to guess why a seller behaves that way is also speculation....

in the current moment that "outragious" sellers seem to split into 2 big parties:
- the greedy ones hunting for big bucks and speculation ( this is partially dependent to time before christmas for example )....
- the stupid guys that don´t know really what they are selling and are stupid enough
...to not accept serious comments about outragious prices or wrong description in their listings....
and sometimes even just those that are a violation of ebay rules because they are betrayal....

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Good evening apple7159 and All,

If any thread is non-hijack able its this one. lol

I expected to hear from all sides when I started it.
Believe me, we've had a few sections where it was hot and heavy,
but that too is expected.

We have seen everything up here from the sublime
to the ridiculous and back again.

One of my "Pet Peeves" is someone buying a unit (II Plus, IIe, IIgs, IIc, etc.)
from a yard or estate sale. They paid a few bucks for it because the owner wants to get rid of it quick. They have no idea what they have or how to operate it to test it.

But (there's always a but) they see "Apple" on it and they immediately think
they have a Gold Mine and they place a price on it that would gag almost anyone.

I know we've all seen it.

If you ask some Sellers questions
about the unit they're selling, they
get all huffy and then block you from
bidding or asking questions again.

Some Sellers don't know about the unit and actually
respond with questions.

I send them links to web-sites
that will show them what they have
and how to know the differences between models.

And so it goes...

Hello tokabln,

but in such case the blame is to put on ebay.....
the shippping costs nowadays are calculated often by the ebaytool automatic....
in this case calculating from New York to Berlin....
and time of the airbridge passed away 50 years ago...LOL
and that tool is for sure rather often to be blamed originating from "outer space" LOL

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Emphatically NO! They never came like that. Never ever ever. The only time Apple really used shrink-wrap was on the thin manuals and manuals with disks. Maybe some small accessory parts. But definitely never on those 3-ringers! And NOT on the consoles themselves.

And what's with the white AC cord? An introl x-10 or battery-backup or something?

I wrote the guy and he said he wasn't sure if it was new. Well what the fuck guy? Get with the program. Tell us if it *IS* or ISN'T new and be honest about it.

And everyone knows you need to look inside.

Some sellers..

The seller was nice to work with and updated the title and removed "New". High-priced for a II+ ?? Yes. An honest seller/liquidator? Probably yes.

The white AC cord is probably for an internal M&R fan, which were fairly common for the era. The Kensington System Saver killed the internal fan suppliers like M&R and their copycats.

The Point of Diminishing Returns...

Good Evening All,

I was thinking about breaking this out into a separate thread,
but I wanted to get feedback from everyone before I did.

As the Title indicates; when does
"The Point of Diminishing Returns..."
come into play.

The Point of Diminishing Returns (in my opinion)
is that point when you have spent a lot of money
to collect Apple II items (Hardware, Cards, Software, etc.)
and have gotten to the point of hoarding, but have not had the
time to enjoy what you have collected.

I find myself in a situation that I never imagined.
While I was working, I bought what I could when I could.
If I thought that I didn't have an item, I would by it and put it away.
If I thought that an item was going for an excellent price I would by it and put it away.
If I thought that an item was extremely rare and I could afford it, I would by it and put it away.

Since I am not working now, I have started taking inventory
of what I actually have.
It is not a pretty sight. lol

The first thing I have been doing is sorting
the different types of items into storage boxes.

The next thing is going to be separating both Software
and Hardware into Categories and finding out just
how many of each item I actually have and what I actually need.

And it goes on from here.

This is one time that "THIS is Not Laughable".

This is over 20 couple years of collecting.

I cannot believe that I am the only 'Fritter Critter"
to have hit this wall.

Are there any other stories out there?

Not at all- I'm sure we all do that. I binge and purge. I will purge large items or items I know I will never need or play with again. I then buy things I never had before, and the cycle continues...

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I went a little crazy in the late 90s/early 00s when stuff was so cheap and plentiful at thrift stores. I'd find myself thinking, "Do I really need a 50th II+?" Of course I didn't, but at $10 or $20 it always felt like a bargain. Unfortunately, I moved out of country for a while and decided to let most of it go for probably less than I paid. If I still had it to unload on eBay now, I would have made a tidy profit.

Now I'm down to just a pair of IIgs, three original IIs, and a III. I buy interesting peripherals when they show up, but I don't expand the number of computers anymore. I mostly just use one IIgs, so even this is more than I need. I should put the IIs up for sale while they are still going for big money, but I haven't been able to part with them yet.

Rittwage, Billw, and All,

I think when I'm all done I will have the following Hardware:

1 x Apple II
2 x Apple II+
2 x Apple IIe
2 x Apple IIc (ROM3&ROM4)
2 x Apple IIc+
2 x Apple IIgs (ROM3)
1 x Laser 128EX
1 x Laser 128EX Expansion Box
1 x Mountain Expansion Chassis (Complete and fully functional)

Then I can start going through all the Expansion Cards, etc.

I'll go through the Software last.

Now that I'm retired I can do that. lol

Don't forget to voice your vote on whether or not this should be a separate thread.

I think we should just let this thread morph into that thread. Some of our stashes may indeed be laughable.

I bet if we all got together and sold off our excesses this summer (flooding the market) we could do some damage to the high prices.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

Rarely does anyone build focus in a collection until it gets out of hand. Happens to everyone. I say this because I hear of much downsizing lately.

Regarding my own personal collection:

From time to time I think about downsizing it all into 2 categories. 1- The stuff I had as a kid and did all my learning and science experiments and explorations on. 2- The crap filler material I bought on ebay starting in the dot-com epoch. This #2 stuff is what I would dump. Heh..

The first category is really sentimental and still very comprehensive. And it fits in my car trunk and maybe the back seat. That's the life-keepers. The second batch I wouldn't mind selling on fleabay at the going rate, in other words. Post on message boards announcing the auction and let it ride. I have no idea what some of the rare cards are worth anymore. And don't really care. Most of this shit has little or no meaning to me. Zero sentiments. Zero nostalgia. Right now it's just sitting there. I don't even have the motivation to archive and scan the material anymore.

I know one thing for certain is that with a tight collection you can enjoy the stuff better. A hell of a lot better. Your mind is freed of the bulk and can concentrate on the good stuff. A caveat is that you may frequently encounter a situation or think of something and regret selling "just that one piece".

Gone back and forth on this for a while. Eventually the glass will tip in one way or the other.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

The duplicates and triplicates worth keeping are a few machines for spare parts or just strip the machines and keep the parts in a small box.

Notice on ebay that there are more individual parts for sale nowadays?

I bet if we all got together and sold off our excesses this summer (flooding the market) we could do some damage to the high prices.

Well I'm definitely going to be selling a bunch more stuff this summer... not necessarily to undercut on prices, though.

The duplicates and triplicates worth keeping are a few machines for spare parts or just strip the machines and keep the parts in a small box.

Duplicates, maybe. But you've got to keep a firm hand on how many machines you really need for spare parts. A big impetus for my downsizing was the realization that I was storing all this broken stuff that was nothing more than clutter. I was never using it, so I decided to get rid of it.

I love the username of that seller.

Have to be crazy to sell it at that price, and crazy to buy it or bid for it at that price.

Re: THIS is Laughable!

I've noticed that even Goodwill is pricing old Apple items for quite a bit more these days. Around 2004, I would occasionally see stacks of IIgs systems being sold for $10 each. The other day, I noticed a IIgs in a Goodwill "Computer Works" store that was Priced To Sell at $100.

Oh, and I was extremely fortunate to buy one of those $10 IIgs systems that was loaded with a Transwarp GS, PC Transporter, and a RamFAST SCSI card. What a day that was!
