iBook Video Out require vid card?

continuing and investigating into a possible hack, I disassembled my sisters old iBook (Paris). It has some nice features like firewire and video out. With the LCD in bad shape and not even powering on, I believe the video out port is my only way of investigating if the system still works.

I have a generic video adaptor (from a camcorder) that plugs right in into the port and the other to the RCA input of my home theater. When I power on the book the classic start up chime is heard through the speaker of my home stereo, however no video appears.

Do you think the screen must be functional inorder to put a video signal out? Anyone have experience hacking one of these?

Quick Update...

In attempt to try and determine what is going on, I tried to share the damaged iBook with my G4 , with no success. Dunno of the iBooks firewire was damaged or if this was simply not a feature.

next comes the network, see if my router see it.

I think there might be some sort of sense lines of logic in the Apple adpaters. My iBook "knows" when I plug one in, and if it is a VGA or the composite adapter and adjusts the screen accordingly, IIRC.

Thanks Jon, I have a feeli

Thanks Jon,

I have a feeling that this may be the case. Video still does not want to go out.

My Router identified the damaged iBook, and looks like DHCP is turned on, as my router assigned it a IP address and I was able to get its MAC address.

I think I may need to create a boot CD, with some apple script to turn on apple share... I can only hope this will let me in. Unfortunately its running OS9 and havn't been in there for over a year now.

Sharing via firewire is still not an option it seems. Anyone know if the 'T' start up command will work on these iBooks?

With the proper VGA adapter,

With the proper VGA adapter, the iBook will drive an external screen, even with the onboard screen broken, or even totally missing. Did it myself while waiting for a replacement screen.

Hmm... I don't see any way to plut in any VGA adaptor unless its throught the composite AV port. I know you can do it with the new iBooks, but one of the older clamshell iBooks?

Got any links to this adaptor.... might be worth the investment.

There isn't

There isn't a VGA adapter for the Clamshell. I'm not sure, but I think the RCA adapter for the clamshell is unique, so it may just be that the one you are using won't work because it doesn't align correctly. It should have come withe the adapter, though. Mine did (iBook 466Mhz SE).

UPDATE 2/29/04 (Happy Leap Year)

Thanks to a PC buddy in the IT Department I found a great way to transfer all the files off the iBook's hard drive. We used a 2.5" Notebook Drive Adapter ($9.50 - corpsys.com). It allowed us to hook up the iBooks HD to my G4. On the adapter is the power and master/slave jumpers.

So the system has a new OS, which I can configure on my G4. Hopefully the next step is simply loading the software needed and adding the images.

Thanks
