I REALLY dislike AFF2...

I really am starting to get annoyed with AppleFritter 2, for one its bulky and slow to load, its now not as customizable being that we only have the option of "Applefritter" or "XTemplate", what happened to "Interlaced". The Forums still do not work, you cannot edit your topics, still no avatars, your post do not show info about you like how many posts you have, no signatures...
AF2 is 10 lbs. of problem in a 5 lbs. bag, and on top of all this now we are forced to use it...
I am quite unhappy...

I like AFF2

I like AFF2. The deficiencies that you mention, post counts, avatars, and signatures don't matter that much to me. What I really like are the much improved "Recent" lists (including the list of recent Blog and Images). I feel like navigation is improved. I like the Blog and Photo Gallery features (and hope to use them soon). My only wish is that forum text was single spaced (it renders space and half in iCab).

Keep up the great work!

it's not done yet. Many hours

it's not done yet. Many hours of work have been put into the new AF, and it's getting better.

And though you're not forced to use it, even if the forums were completely toasted and just barely useable AF would still be twice as good as, say, SpyCrack.
And by the way, if you really don't like AF2:

If someone would hurry up and de-Xtemplatise the Applefritter theme, I can start re-doing the forums to have all the things everyone wants - and then some.

Barracks Moved

FYI, the barracks moved to:

just in case people wonder why the litclassics site has 100% of topics locked.

Old AF

Any chance of being able to transfer the contents of the
old AF to this board? Lotta good stuff on the old AF. Good
info, good tech stuff, etc. Seems a shame for it all to dis-
appear.

Cannot post to AF (original site)

Yup. Can't post. Tried at 2300hrs (my time) 3 MAR 04.
What's up T. Owad? The server there is getting cranky
also. Freezes up. Not a problem on this site.

Perhaps the old forums can be saved in some form of an easily searchable archive? There's so much info in there- I find myself going back and doing a search a couple of times a week.

No plans to make it disappear. In fact, I was planning to leave it up, as is, indefinitely.

The New AF (Ver. 2.x)

T.Owad;

Thanks, bud. I, too, have come to depend on AF Ver.1.? as an
invaluable reference source. One bit of advice...Instead of just
locking it, how about posting a prominent blurb somewhere at AF1
directing further posting to this site? I have a feeling that
some people have no idea that AF Ver.2.x is the new place to be.
Just a thought. I tend to look at things thru the "dumb guy's"
eyes. Makes things simple for an old guy like me. Good work here,
I'm getting used to the new site. Nice, clean, fast.

Thanks....woogie

GIVE ME AVATARS AND SPEED OR GIVE ME YOU KNOW WHAT!!

Well, i really miss avatars as recognizing who is speaking (im lazy and dont like to read much), and as some form of humor when im bored. I also have clocked the page loading and the new fritter was just a few hundreths of a second slower, but I realize its not the speed, but the interface and usability of the interface. The YABB forum interface was neat, clean, orderly, loaded bit by bit instead of loading all at once, and it is just a TON MORE USEFUL. The rest of the applefritter site works like a peice of %$*! compared to the old one. You also basically took away any possiillity of me checking the forum on my phone.

Get over yourself.

I swear you're on an ego trip or something. Avatars are being worked on its been posted several times before. Same with an improved interface. If you want them now - HELP OUT. Gripeing about it isn't going to get it fixed any faster

"a few hundreths of a second slow" WTF? If your life is so jammed packed that you can't spare "a few hundreths of a second" on each page you really don't need to be reading a forum like this one. Let alone complain about those "few hundreths of a second"

I don't even know where you're getting this "YaBB forum interface was neat, clean, ordered, and bit by bit" crud. Both forums work the same way. There are a couple of minor interface differences but for the most part its the same.

The rest of the site makes it alot easier to add content, which is the point of a web site last I checked. You obviously haven't looked at the code involved with putting up a single story on the old AF. Speaking from experiance its a mess. Plus, in case you missed it, there are more discussions all over the site as opposed to just the forums, which IMNSHO is a great thing.

As a self proclaimed lazy person you should apperciate the recent listings, which have, for me at least, made it a lot easier to see whats changed an move on to other surfing.

And checking the forums on your phone? Notice the platform - phone. As in voice communications. Cell phones are never going to be a real contender for the attention of site deisgners. Take it for what it is - a cool trick and occasionally useful tool but nothing more.

again

If we are still having problems, then why not keep using the old forums? I think the site is still clunky, kinda like windows me or something.

I SERIOUSLY CHECK THE FORUMS ON A CELL PHONE WHEN IM AWAY FOR A WEEK OR SO. ITS NOT JUST TO SHOW OFF. it may be little hard to read, but this site doesnt even load very well at all, and you can barely read the forums, with all this sidebar stuff.

The old forum just didnt have all these dumb graphics on the side, I know its what most sites do and it has some links on it, but on a forum people like quick loading, there should be an option to turn the sidebar on or off, or something.

the users, not the forums are whats bad

If you ask me, I don't like the new format either, but that will change in time. It seems to me as though the people here are what has gotten bad. People are using language that was un-exceptable on the old forums stuff that i got busted for once over there. Everyone complains now, im not getting the help i used to when i had a problem and i just don't think many of us are really here anymore. I know AF used to be the first forum i checked everyday, not anymore, i used to be on AF all day, and now i just check one a day if even that. I think the page layout and design is not our problem, the real problem is what has happend to the members. and i know i am not helping by saying this, but i felt as though it is true. This forum just doesn't seem as honorable as it used to be. Blush

Oh, Hazel, look. The field! It's covered in blood

I guess this will start a flame war, but I've also seen a change in the way that people act and post on this new board. I came late to the other board and I really didn't get to use it that much, but when I did, I found most there to be helpful and courteous. This should be like moving into a new house. Start all over and make it your own. Don't bicker and rant...help each other. Even if you're not a tech-head you may have an explanation that would make things easier for a person asking a question. I came here to learn, not complain.

When you move

Things get lost and misplaced. Give them a break there is a TON of material on AF and it would be unreasonable to expect all of it to be transfered to a new format without a glitch. Plus AF is not a full time deal for anyone involved.

The forums didn't NEED to move . . .

. . . I'm not a complainer, but I'm getting VERY tired of reading apologetics for the state of the 'fritter forums! I do understand that it's a big (part time) job and that content creation may, in fact, be much easier on the rest of the site. However, those points are ENTIRELY irrelevant to this discussion as those things have nothing to do with what forum members are constantly complaining about.

Reading and posting in the 2.0 forums just doesn't appear to be an enjoyable experience for a MUCH larger percentage of the membership than was true in the 1.0 -> 1.5 'fritter facelift. IMNSHO it's actually a freakin' CHORE and that is the reason why nobody seems to be hanging out a/o posting here! The forums just plain don't work correctly yet. I can think of no reasonable explanation for forcing the entire 'fritter community to move here where we have to deal with bug-ridden alphaware full time when the 1.5 forums worked just fine. The posts this time around are nowhere near being in the same category as the "I just don't like the change" complaints that were so lightly dismissed the last time around. I think it's time for a rethink of the overall strategy here.

The "recent view" is a good case in point, it's not even labeled as a "site" view! There are "site browsers" and "forum" participants and their wants, needs, likes and dislikes are entirely different. Most of 'fritter's content isn't actually "technically" oriented, it's design/appearance oriented, IIRC. There was a lot more technical discussion on the "old" forums and the "Mafia," fritter's only technically useful, member driven content production project, seems still to be entirely AWOL!

As far as cell phone and handheld browsers go, don't be so flip in your dismissals, guys. I can't wait for a decent small screen browser to catch fire. When it does I just pray I'll be able to run an emulator on my desktop! The wants and needs of "web desigers" seem to be directly at odds with their target "audience." Web design is ATROCIOUS as a whole as it stands today. Heaven forbid I ever need to take a step back down to dialup, because the average "eye candy" crud "web designers" seem to be cranking out lately is beginning to bog down DSL and cable connections.

IMNSHO, of course,
jt
