Interesting stuff at Surplus Exchange

If any one has some real interest in unusual hardware, I'm willing to act as a purchaser for non-locals from http://www.surplusexchange.org in exchange for a meager sum. I'm not always available to go by during their open hours, but they are open Sat. too, so I can likely make it by at least once a week if someone is looking for something specific.

Today I was there and found:

Acute Networking Tech Windows CE-based thin clients, they work with Citrix ICA and Win RDC services. They seem to also support local web browsing based on config options for the terminal, but there is no network to put them on to try/verify this.

5000 model (needs regular computer power cable):

1000 model (all 1000 models I saw did have the power brick included):

Many of these have config passwords set. I did test one 5000 that did not, and one 1000 that did.

Also I saw, but did not test an HP DesignJet 10PS. It did have a full set of carts, but I dunno how full/empty they were, and if it was tested by them.

A few Compaq SCSI drive sleds with 4.3GB wide (68-pin) SCSI 'Cudas and a few with 10k RPM 18.2GB Wide Ultra SCA SCSI HP OEM drives. The label is mostly obscured by the sled, but I'd guess them to be 'Cudas or Cheetahs.

Many PC PCI AHA-2940 cards, many various AGP/PCI video cards, many Slot-1 P2 and Celeron CPU modules, there are various HDDs in SCSI and ATA, and today there was an Apple logo'd 30GB ATA drive.

This isn't really FS/T, so I stuck it in my blog. I'm willing to buy and ship things for people who can't find these locally, and don't want to deal with ePay. I'm not looking for huge profits, but something for my time and gas.

New toys!!1 OMG!1!

I was at S.E. on Thurs. and, boy, am I glad I passed over a pair of stock 233MHz G3 AIOs for $10 each. Heck, those might still be there tomorrow. Instead, I picked up a very cherry HP 200LX 1Mb, and an HP OmniGo 100 1MB. I just did a check on eBay, and even a 1MB 200lx can get over $100. I only gave $5 each. Wink Add in another $5 for a pair of CR2032s and a few spare AAs and I'm not even up to $20 in these things. I really like the 200lx, but it's so mint fine I don't want to spoil the value and wear out the hinge, or even break a key. If I find another beat up 200lx to use I'd be happy.

After working on monday I drove back down a certain road to see what the trash men left. The evening before I had spotted a Mac Classic in the back of a trash pile waiting for the bulk pickup day. The trashmen tend to leave CRT stuff behind, as the usually has a fee charged for the disposal, and they did just that for the Classic. i stopped and stuck it in my truck and headed for home. It had rained a bit, but the Classic had been situated under a tree and it's design didn't lend much to water flowing into it anyway. I opened the case and dried the little dampness in the bucket. The mobo was a tad dusty, but I was very glad to see the RAM card and the HDD! Whew! It's a stock Classic 2/40, so I can scrounge some of my 1MB SIMMs to get 4MB. It had a half-dead isntall of 6.08 on it and a bunch of old games. I wanted to fix the 6.08 with a reinstall, but the floppy drive wouldn't read anything, and always tried to format a disk. I had to crack it open again ad remove the floppy drive. I took a Q-tip and some 91% IPA to the heads (very carefully, and watched for straggling cotton fibers!) and reassembled. The drive began to work great and the install went well. Now it's a healthy stock Classic with a fresh 6.08 and a couple dozen very old games. I'm betting the floppy drive and the age are why it ended up in the trash. The case was a bit dirty, but has NO yellowing. A few scratches and marks on the rear bottom corners, to be expected. All-in-all, cosmetically this thing would get an or 9 of 10. I'd say it and the 200lx are in choice shape.

Or couse the 200lx is much more valuable... Now I gotta decide if I really want to finish off my collection of beige G3 machines, as I have a dead G3DT, and pair of G3MTs. I already sent one DT off to TO, but I don't think a 233MHz, 32MB, 4Gb OS 8.1 G3 AIO would go over well with the wife...
