HELP!!! Beige G3 Won't Boot, No active package

By Beige G3 266 will not boot from HD or from ANY CD. I get the following error

(Black screen - white text)
no active package
Default catch!, code=fff00300 at %SRR0: 01c0cab4 %SRR1: 00003070
Open Firmware, 2.4
To continue booting the MacOS type:
BYE
To continue booting from the default boot device type:
BOOT
For Open Firmware serial I/O type:
TTYA IO
ok
0>

I have had OSX 10.2.8 operating on this before in the exact hardware configuration it is currently in. Currently there is one 8GB HD with the OS installed and one 30GB HD(used as storage). There is no OS9 partition/drive. From the Open Firmware menu, if I type BYE or BOOT I get no response, not even a return of OK and the machine freezes. If I type TTYA IO I get a return of OK and the prompt changes to 1>
If I attempt to boot from o OSX 10.2 CD I get screen garbage and a frozen PC shortly after seeing the grey apple logo. If I attempt to boot from OS 9.2 cd the computer freezes whil attempting to load some of the extensions.

I have tried zapping the PRAM multiple times with no luck
I have forced the Open Firmware (cmd+alt+O+F) and typed

reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all

machine reboots into same state.

I cannot find anyone/anything about Open Firmware 2.4

The last thing I did before the computer crashed was installed Patchburn and attempted to "patch" my external USB DVD+RW. This has worked before too, but not this time. I have removed the Macally usb/firewire PCI card from the machine figuring it was causing some conflict but still nothing.

I just want to boot the computer and run OSX 10.2.8
Any help is greatly appreciated. Please realize I know nothing about Linux......

Thanks

dont type reset-nvram that is

dont type reset-nvram that is for newer Mac's you need to type init-nvram its the same command that reset-nvram is do you see a OK when you hit enter after you type reset-nvram if you do nevermind what i said above. the reason i said the above is because i cant use the command reset-nvram it gives me a unknown word or command. i have to use init-nvram.

BTW have you replaced the pram battery

have you held the cuda button for 30 seconds

Thanks.... You're right, the

Thanks....
You're right, the correct syntax is init-nvram. Unfortunately, it did not help, neither did the cuda button. The battery is fine. The problem is with the harddrive, patchburn must have really messed it up. I put in a different harddrive with os 10.2.8 already installed and it booted fine. The original harddrive wouldn't mount so I had to erase it and format it (ehich was exactly what I was trying to avoid) and after that I attempted to run a clean install on it but there were errors. Now what I would like to do is a "low level" format and zero all the data on the original harddrive. What is the best utility to do this? Is there some firmware update/downgrade I should put on the original harddrive?
Thanks

i would do it with drive util

i would do it with drive utility in the OS X installer i would use OS 9.x install cd and use that in the drive setup and select initilation options in the apple menu and select what you need to do. it is best with a Beige G3 to do all of this in OS 9.x

HELP!!! Beige G3 Won't Boot, No active package

I have a Rev A desktop in the same "no active package" state. I know it is not the hard drive because the problem persists if I totally disconnect the HD and just try to boot from CD. Two or three previous IDE hard drives died in this beige, so I have tentatively concluded that something is wonky on the logic board.

After I get my Rev B mini-tower going, I'm going to transplant a working Rev A logic board from the parts mini-tower into the "no active package" desktop and see if that cleans it up.
