Apple's Computer Recycling Program?

Anybody hear of this before? No details yet on how the program works or what dollar value would be attached to the old stuff. I just heard of it this morning from a newsletter from OWC that had the following blurb in it:

And now Apple's upcoming Computer Recycling Program. If it lets you dust off a decade plus old Mac or non-Mac that's become useless and give some trade-in value, that can make a lot of sense. But for Macs made within the last seven or eight years, and even older Macs depending on what you use them for, there might be better options for you in keeping it. We won't find out what Apple's deal is utill June. Whatever that deal turns out to be, there are certain things that won't change...

Definitely certain things that won't change. Like the desire to slap anyone who would consider sending in a working vintage Mac to save a few bucks on new gear.

But still, I wouldn't mind being the guy in Apple's receiving department opening the boxes from recycling program participants!

Finally

Something to do with all those LC 580, LC 630, Performa 5200, 6200/6300 series machines. Hmmm, maybe send a PowerBook 190/5300. Honestly, I think we all could do without remembering those 1995-1996 vintage dogs that Apple put out. I love macs, but even those machines are pushing it for me.

I suspect you'd be legally obligated to *not* walk off with anything.

it's highly likely

...that Apple would hire someone who hates the old stuff, or maybe has little interest in keeping any of it.

Really, it's not worth their time to do things like open the boxes and check for mezzanine video cards in rev A imacs and ethernet cards in LC475s. It's all going to go into a big dumpster, I reckon, and that dumpster is headed for a recycler that sucks the precious metals out of the logic boards and carefully disposes of Lithium Batteries. No one is even going to turn these machines on.

My, the image this evokes. I think it's great that Apple is doing that, I certainly hope, however, that the average users definition of obsolete makes sense; my mind's eye sees perfectly good iBooks, iMacs and G3's on their way to meet their Maker (too good to resist).
Peace,

"Perfectly Good" & Perception

My definition of perfectly good is something that still has use. For instance, the iBook was really designed for students and the average consumer, not for real power users. For simple tasks, such as writing that term paper, sending your psychotic, paranoid ramblings via email to your congressman or surfing the Internet to find sites pertaining to government conspiracies, UFO's or certain forms of horticulture, it was just fine. And let's face it... the original Clamshell design was pretty darned tough.
Anything can be perfectly good to some people. It comes down to what uses you plan for them. As I've posted elsewhere in 'Fritter, most of my computers see quite a bit of usage. Even my old Tandy Model 102 gets used more often than not (and like a Malaysian cockroach, it is hard to kill).
Perfectly good comes down to the user's perception. It just varies from person to person. Besides, if everybody felt the way I did, the massive wheels of progress would slow to a crawl, the captain's of industry would be hurling themselves from their rooftops, our economy would collapse and the world would surely end for most Wall Street types.
Actually, that all has a certain anarchist appeal...

We let's face it.. not everyo

We let's face it.. not everyone is as enthusiastic about their computers as we happen to be. But computer recycling really needs to happen. Wander the thrift store all over the area where I live and more and more the stores are turning down computer equipment. People don't want to buy a 7-8 year old computer when you can pick one up for less than $500. The result is that the store are stuck with a hugh inventory that they have to auction off for basically the cost of hauling it away. Monitors have to be disposed of and it is charged as hazmat. Finally, the liability for identity theft has made Goodwill and Salvation Army get out of the donation computer business, making part scavaging more difficult than ever.

I rather have Apple reclaim the majority of these computers and dispose of its components properly than see another computer sticking out of the mud at the dump. Besides it will prompt apple users to embrace technology inovations faster than they have in recent history.

I agree. I work with engineer

I agree. I work with engineers now who are younger than some of the computers is in my collection. As much as I enjoy my geeky hobby, not everything is of equal worth to me and it would better to have the components recycled than just acting as fill.
