free memory testers for PC's

i have a client's machine which i *suspect* is having a memory problem. I need a free memory tester so i can test the memory. If anyone has any ideas, please lay them out here...
It is running windows XP, but i can use any Operating system (including linux if needbe) as i have dos, windows 9x, win2k, and xp at my disposal

Many of the Linux LiveCDs, an

Many of the Linux LiveCDs, and even install CDs have MemTest86 as a boot option. Heck, even a lot of the "mini" linux distros (the 50-250MB types) have MemTest86 on 'em. So, you may already have it on a CD somewhere if you have a Linux distro on hand.

You might as well just download a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD:

Has Memtest86, HDD diagnostic utilities from all the major drive manufacturers, plus a bunch of other stuff.
