I went on to http://www.resexcellence.com/user_X_login.shtml to get a new log in screen, boot image, and hummingbird cursor. the cursor and the boot image work fine but I can't get the log in screen page to work.
The steps said:
Step 1- backup files!

Thanks for downloading this login panel replacement! First of all, you've heard it a million times, but that's because it's a good idea... backup all your original files! After a few days, you may think "Man, what was I smoking when I downloaded this thing??" and you will be most displeased if you don't have a backup!

Log out and then back in as ROOT. What is root, you ask?? Well, if you don' t know then you are probably not the kind of person who should be replacing login panels anyway. If you want to learn, there are plenty of places on the web to read up on it.

The files you will be replacing are--

found in: /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow/Resources/

found in: /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow/Resources/English.lproj/

Take these originals and move them to a backup folder.

Step 2- replace files

Ok, now that you have the originals moved, drop the new files into their respective places. Also , if you want to be rid of that ugly blue picture behind the login, replace "Aqua Blue.jpg" (found in /Library/Desktop Pictures/) with the included one. Much nicer effect, in my opinion. P.S.-- You need to have the "papyrus" font installed. If for some reason you removed it, it shouldn't be a big deal, it just might display funny.

Step 3- enjoy!

There! That's all there is to it. Log out, and there you will have a pleasant login panel greeting you. If it didn't work, go back and make sure you followed each step EXACTLY. Email me with questions, comments, money, whatever.

My /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow is an application instead of a folder, what should I do?

No offense, but I think you should learn a little more about Mac OS X system files and hacking software before trying to edit a vital and important file.
