How do I identify this G4 processor??

Someone is selling this procesor with the numbers XSC7400HIP3500CC, T41803, 337-2572. The actual computer serial # is missing so I cant identify what type of G4 processor this is through apple support.

Does anyone know what machine this came from and its speed??

Thanks.

Wild Guess

I'm guessing it's a G4/500 chip.

Googling/Yahooing found one result - an eBay auction....

Judging from the bottom of the chip it looks like it came from a Yikes G4 (PCI graphics).

If I could run one of those in my B/W G3, I'd get it. Smile

Well, I'll bet that's the exa

Well, I'll bet that's the exact auction he's looking at, so you've just alerted anyone interested to it, and now he's got much more potential competition on the bidding, maybe even myself! Wink I keep a bookmark for "G4 ZIF," not for "G4 Processor," so I didn't notice this one.

It's a 7400 G4 ZIF. It's come to my attention lately that the later models, the 7410 and the 7450, run cooler and are more tolerant of overclocking, so I'm watching more for those.

That'll work ...

in a B&W G3, heck even a Beige. If memory serves correctly, Apple never actually shipped a PCI graphics (yikes) G4 with a 500 mhz chip. I recall those only shipping with a 350/400 mhz chip in them. If it's a ZIF 500 mhz G4, it will most likely be a third party upgrade board like a Sonnet or some such. It could be this http://www.everymac.com/upgrade_cards/powerlogix/powerforce_g4_zif/powerforce_g4_zif_500.html

I have a 500 mhz Sonnet G4 ZIF in my basement Mac, a beige G3 desktop. It's got a 4gb drive, cd-rom, zip, and 320 mb of RAM. I've got it running 10.2.8, which it does decently. It was a retired lab machine that started acting up - one of the ram slots doesn't work reliably. (one that I have a 64mb chip in).

350mhz

If you check that auction now, he's saying it's a 350mhz G4 ZIF, so probably the earliest Yikes! ZIF. I'm curious about the heatsink clip pictured. I've got Beige's and B&W's but never had, or seen the insides of, a Yikes! Is that the clip for a Yikes! heatsink? It's got two aluminum bars with four attachments rather than the one aluminum bar with two attachments on the standard ZIF heatsink.

Interesting: the seller says he's not a tech, but his huge inventory in his auctions is comprised of all kinds of electronic and computer stuff. I don't know how he could even identify a lot of it if he's not a tech.

He might be saying he's not a Mac tech. I've known a lot of technically minded people experienced with PCs that act like the Mac is a totally foreign group of technology.

Yikes G4

Internally, the Yikes G4 is identical to a B&W G3, save for lack of the adb port. There is some variation with the heatsink, but for the most part, the heatsinks are identical to those on the B&W g3.

As for pc tech's not knowing much about Macs ... That isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's helped me get jobs and some computer equipment cheaply.

Oops..... didn't even think about that.

It's tempting to try to bid on it, but I won an auction last week for a Rev. 2 B/W G3 logic board, 400mhz processor and ATI Rage128 video card and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.

Competition with the Bidding....

Dont worry guys.....I needed a 733 DA processor...not a 450. But thanx for the concern. Smile If anyone wants to sell a DA 733 processor...let me know.

Peace.
