Getting on the Internet

Hey there guys

So I've got this LC575 here. Nice classic mac. I want to get it onto the internet - it has a PDS Ethernet Card installed, with both the normal plug and the old coaxial thing. Simply put - is it possible to plug a ethernet cable to my IBM XP laptop, which is getting wireless internet from a ADSL Router. Could the internet be "passed through" to the Mac?

What kinds of software would I need?
Is it even possible?
Other alternatives?

Thanks,

blakeX

yea it will work. just i don'

yea it will work. just i don't know how to enable internet connection sharing in windows to do it. you will have to set the ethernet port on the windows machine as what its using to share to the other computer and the wifi as what connection its sharing. now in OS X its easy. i cant remember what type of ethernet cable you need to do this. there are 2 types of ethernet cable ones called crossover and i cant remember the other one. but yea it will work just fine. you might need to make sure the LC575 is going to use the ethernet as its connection and you might have to manually set its IP if selecting DHCP wont work. you will have to know what the internal IP of the windows Pc is using and like i said above you might have to manually set the IP on the lc475 to the same IP but the last digit one number higher or lower.

some one else could give you better info than what i could. but i tryed

Use a 100BaseT switch

You've got a router to assign addresses via DHCP. All you need now is an Ethernet switch so the router can work with both machines.

You should be able to pick up an Ethernet switch just about anywhere: CompUSELESS, Best Buy, Circuit City, even Wal-Mart. If you spend more than $30, you're probably spending too much.

Router -----> Switch -----> PC
.............................'--------> LC575

humm i dont think you will ne

humm i dont think you will need a ethernet switch or hub to do this. i shared my dialup threw the ethernet port on my Beige G3 with a 4 foot long crossover ethernet cable to a digital Audio G4. i remember the names for the 2 types of ethernet cables they are crossover and patch. i think one will work which is the crossover and one might not which is the patch cable. the crossover ethernet cable is the only one that dont require a hub or switch to work

... i shared my dialup threw the ethernet port on my Beige G3 with a 4 foot long crossover ethernet cable to a digital Audio G4 ...k

But this is Mac to Mac. He's trying to get his OS 9 Mac to use a shared Internet connection from his Windows PC. Possible, I'm told, but not for the weak at heart.

Besides, if he's running DSL, why slow the connection down by making one machine share its connection? And why set up so the PC has to be on for the Mac to get on the Internet? Use a switch, and either machine can be on the web independently of the other.

i dont think it will slow it

i dont think it will slow it down that much that you will be able to tell. you will be doing the same thing with the router or switch or hub.

it should not be that hard to share a connection to a Mac from a PC. that is if you select the Mac's ethernet port to use DHCP. its doable how i dont know cause i dont know how to turn on ICS in XP but its there and should work fine..
now sharing files between the 2 Mac and PC will be the hard part Which you are thinking of. cause in order to share files and stuff between a Mac running the classic os and a windows pc is you have to have a app called dave on the Mac to support the windows file sharing protocol

but sharing a connection threw ethernet port will be easy once you know how to work it on XP. TCP/IP is TCP/IP no matter how you look at it. you might have to know the ip of the PC and enter the ip into the Mac manually only the last number one number higher

Hi everyone. Thanks for yo

Hi everyone.

Thanks for your help, but I no longer have the XP laptop - I'm all Mac now. Anyway, the LC575 is out of action at the moment - I am modding it.
