New AMD mobo format - DTX

http://www.internetnews.com/ent-news/article.php/3653251

DTX will measure 200 mm by 244mm, or 7.8 inches by 9.4 inches. It's designed to use 65-watt central processors and 25-watt graphics processors, which will reduce the heat output and, thus, reduce the need for cooling.

What caught my eye was how they opened the story:

Move over, Mac Mini. AMD today announced plans for a new motherboard form factor that will make PCs smaller, quieter and more desktop friendly.

Huh. I was under the impression that the *case* of my mini measures 165x165mm. The mobo is obviously smaller. I hate stupid reporters who can't fact check a simple technical detail that they use to make the opening point of their story, especially if it's wrong. It's neat that they are starting a smaller "standard" but, really, how much smaller that a Shuttle et al will they get and still use regular desktop components? Once they hit laptop components, all the arguments against Apple for doing it come right back into play.

The format will likely have a case that has the footprint larger than that of a standard US magazine, 265x200mm. My P4 tower adds another 190mm to the 265, and that's it. The rest is vertical. "Footprint" is a non-issue. How about total case volume? Can a DTX even come close to a mini, or even the old LC pizza boxes? I doubt it.

/. story too

Haha. I beat /., even though I got the link from the Linux Today RSS feed. Of course my second submission for the flaming iBook GPU repair is still pending. Maybe it'll get approved sometime in March. ::rolleyes::
