I'm setting up a Beige G3 MT to play some older games. At the moment it's using the built-in video with a Mac-VGA adapter. When I power it on, it takes a restart using Ctrl-Apple-Power to get video to appear. When the video decides to appear it is stuck at 640x480.
I've cleared preferences to no avail.
I don't know if this helps but it is connected to a KVM switch for video only. It's a shame to let an LCD panel go to waste.
Have you used the Mac to VGA adapter before, at other resolutions? There is a "VGA only" setting on some old adapters, and then another on newer ones that let's it handle multiple SVGA resolutions.
why dont you just buy a ATI Radeon Mac Edition PCI, or a PCI Radeon 7000 Mac Edition PCI video card. you can find them ranging from $16-$30. they have a normal VGA adapter on them and you will be able to use every avail rez on that monitor. not to mention will speed up the performance 100 fold in both games and normal OS useage. the thing that is limiting your screen rez is the Mac video to vga adapter. also sometimes in the moniotr prefrence pane you sometimes can select to show all available screen rez. if thats not available then you might not see the rest of them.
but more than likely its that Mac to VGA adapter. some will only do a few screen rex at a set refresh rate. some have dip switches on them and they have to be set correctly to be able to use a diffrent screen rez and refresh rate. i have a Mac to vga adapter i use on my P475 and i just tryed it on my Beige G3 and i still can use all my screen rez. my adapter supports any screen rez that the monitor will support.
Strangely enough, it worked just fine with MacOS 9.1 at 1280*1024.
I have a couple of Rage128 cards. One is an Xclaim VR (no TV box unfortunately), another is a pull from a Rev A B/W G3. I haven't had the chance to install either of those yet.
The Mac-VGA adapter let it run at 1280x1024 under MacOS 9.1.
At the moment my wife and I are saving for a house, so we're not spending too much on extra stuff.
I have had Mac video issues using a KVM, though only with one no-name import model I grabbed off ebay. The Mac determines available resolutions based on feedback from the monitor port, so some KVM's apparently don't provide that. It will also make a difference whether the G3 is selected on the KVM during its boot-up.
Easiest way to rule that out is to direct connect monitor to G3 and see if that gives you your missing resolutions.
those rage 128 cards or the xclaim card will get you buy but are not the best card to put into the Beige G3. if i was you i would buy a Orignal Radeon or a Radeon 7000, for one they are more capable and will yeild better results. those cards you mentioned will be faster than the onboard video but not by much. they will however get you buy till you find a Radeon Mac Edition PCI video card.
you will be allot happyer with a faster video card cause you will see a nice performance gain from a Radeon over the rage 128
