My next build will probably

My next build will probably be a Digital Audio based frankenmac, starting from the cheapest functioning 466MHz logic board I can find, and then dropping the best CPU into it I can afford. It's not likely I can shell out for a new third party upgrade, so I'm looking at the available used OEM Apple CPU modules on ebay. I would guess a dual 450/500 could be sourced pretty cheap.

Hunting around xlr8yourmac.com, I see info on dropping 133MHz modules into 100MHz Sawooth/AGP lobos, but nothing's turning up on doing the reverse.

I realise that at the very least I'd have to reduce the bus:CPU ratio so I'm not OCing the procs, and do something about heatsinking. Is that it, or is there anything else I should look out for? Smile

Not going to happen

Dual Apple G4 processors are rectangular. The places for the processor socket are on opposite sides of the processor board for the 100 and 133MHz processors. If you lined-up the socket on the processor with the motherboard, it would block installation of RAM and potentially the AGP video card on ANY 133MHz Apple motherboard.

If you placed the processor in a way that it would not block the RAM and AGP slot, the socket on the processor would not even be close to lining up with the motherboard's socket.

There should be little issue in adapting a single Apple processor from 100 to 133MHz.

The only dual processors that you can do this with would be a NewerTech MAXPower, a Giga Designs processor, or a Sonnet Encore/Duet.

Thanks for the info. The following is good to know.

I have a 350MHz Sawtooth CPU lying around unused (mistaken ebay purchase). Useable?

No problem with that

I have ran a 350/100 at 466/133 with little issue for a few hours at work. I would probably reduce the multiplier to 2.5 or 3x for extended use though.
