Hi all

Has anyone seen the symptoms in the subject? the emac's CRT shows colored areas across desktop, with color shifts that stay in the same basic area. (if you move a window, the window color changes depending on where it is on the screen) Also the screen appears to have light and dark areas. Junk it? Thoughts?

thanks

d

Sounds like the CRT is shot

And that's a *very* expensive repair. However, there are plenty of good components left, so I'd hate to see it junked. Could anyone in your circle use the RAM, hard drive, AirPort Extreme card, CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM) drive, or the logic board?

Just promise to be very, *very*, VERY careful if you decide to open this bad boy up. The CRT can hold an electrical charge for a very long time, and if you're in its way when it discharges, it could seriously injure or kill you. Please leave the harvesting of eMac components to someone with the proper tools and experience.

Couple of other things

I have 2 of them, same make and model. (picked them up on CL) After finding the first problem I tried to check the second one. I plugged the power for the second one in while it was upside down on a cloth (It had no ram in it, I installed 2 spare 133's I had laying around) turned it on while upside down, no video prob. Flipped it right side up, bingo, color weirdness like her twin! wth? I can make the color problems move by moving the eMac. (Both are a good distance away from each other and nothing else is near them. I saw someone ask this same question before I posted this question tonight, when I did a google search for the issue. Other people suggested also that the CRT was hosed and the eMac was kaput, but no one mentioned or discussed that it was related to movement or loose connections of some sort...

(Just an aside, I've been working on Macs for quite some time, just never saw any iMacs or eMacs). I defer to the more knowledgeable techs who've dealt with them, but rest assured, I know how to work on a computer. Thank you for the warning/safety tip. I've posted the same thing on these forums.

Here is the link I found, eMac with the same issue apparently:

After re-reading the above post, I flipped over the second emac to its normal position (it had also gone to sleep in the meantime) and apparently something in these actions has resolved the color problem. I haven't moved it to see if it comes back yet. To me it smells like something loose inside, but danged if spinning it around in a circle earlier when I first saw the problem didnt make the colors all shift and change. I know monitors can have a dark spot based on the earth's magnetic field, but this is crazy.

sounds like magnet problems

like how if you put a magnet to the screen it causes the color to warp or whatnot. so what is sounds more like, is like the monitor has calibration problems. If you turn it off and leave it off for an hour, does it have the problem again?

oh, and if you go to throw it, i claim dibs on the board! I can put in my eMac Laughing out loud

How much? (sorry to sound like a vulture, but it would be nice to have an upgrade to my overclocked 900Mhz eMac)

just convert the thing to lcd

just convert the thing to lcd. it's been done before, and the flat front makes it a perfect candidate for an lcd screen! only issue is i believe there is cutting involved to fit the larger screen area of the 17" lcd. as soon as the crt in my old one dies, i plan to do this.

emac 700MHZ logic board up for grabs!

hi all!

just got a CRT-croaked eMac that works fine on an external display (mini vga?) port....

anyone need an eMac logic board?

It comes with the 700MHz chip on it (i don't want to separate the 2) please let me know!

I would hate to throw away.

Maybe Apple can take for recycle if no one claims it...?

Cheers

e-Mac rainbow CRT

Have you checked to see if the EMI shield is in place. If it has been removed you will get the rainbow colors. I have a 700MHz machine that has the same problem and the EMI shield is gone. There maybe other causes but that is one I'd check.
