Help -- Troubleshooting Rev B iMac

Hi,

This is my first post, and I hate to admit that I've lurked here for quite some time, please don't hold that against me!

Recently, I've begun using my old Message Pad 2000 again and in support of that I went to the archives and broke out the old Bondi Blue rev B iMac. I like this pairing with the Newton because it has the IRDA port.

MY PROBLEM: The iMac says that the CD ROM drive is not responding. I put in disks and they spin, but do not load.

Should I...

1. Buy a used drive and swap it out?
2. Or is there a diagnostic test to see if it is indeed the drive and not some far more serious problem??

Please let me know what you think.

Sincerely,

Mike

firmware?

I vaguely recall that Apple released a firmware update for the iMac rev. a/b cdrom drives at some point. You may want to look into it. It should be somewhere in their old downloads section.

Let us know what happens!

Oh yes, I do remember the old

Oh yes, I do remember the old firmware update. I know that I applied it to the computer in the past. However, I did re-install the system a couple of years ago beginning with OS8 or whatever it came with and moving up to OS 9.2.

I'll try to apply the firmware update again and see what happens. I've found that I can get info in and out via a traveldrive.
