Joysticks & Paddles

I've got an original copy of Decathlon for my iie, on the third event (the shot putt) it requires paddles, now these are unbelievably hard to find in the UK ! However I've seen alot of adaptor leads to enable people to use the old Atari joysticks on the Apple, would the Atari Paddles also work ?

Some I've seen plug direct into a socket on the Motherboard, is this socket present on all iie's ?

Thanks as always !

As far as I know the old socket, that was the only way to plug paddles or joysticks into the Apple II/II+, is present on the IIe motherboard. So I would imagine if you plug something into that socket it would override the plug on the back of the computer for joystick/paddle input.

Just my two cents worth,

Find them, buy them, or build them . . .

There were lots of paddle joystick variations "in the day." The Atari and Apple joysticks/paddles (nine pin paralel) use the same type of connector, but the PINs are differently arranged. I remember one outfit sold a set that had a slide switch that let you use the same paddle set for both computers.

There were also adapters to let you use Atari paddles/joysticks on Apples.

If you really can't find the hardware, you might consider making your own, or your own adapter if you are planning on using the Atari paddles/joystick. There were at least two Apple home hardware making books that showed how to do that.

Also, if you already have a joystick, you could just use it. The X-axis and the Y-axis of the joystick represent the movement of each paddle input.
