PowerBook 180c display problem

This 180c shows a weird behavior. It boots fine, runs fine, but at a certain stage, after 5 to 15 min, the screen gets washed: the lights is on but the finder and the windows disappear. The Mac is still alive because I can, e.g. press the quit combination (cmd + "Q") and the Mac boings to alert to save the running document and so on.

I have all the spare parts for the 180c, but since this unit is actually mint I would like first to get some more info. Can it be a battery-related problem? It seems that without the battery it takes longer for the symptom to appear.
