other uses for airport card slot in ibook/powerbook g3 and early g4s

are there any other uses for the airport card slot in one of these computers? (such as a cf adapter, more usb ports, ect)
i have heard that this is possible, but had no success myself (w/ usb card on original clamshell) just curious...

Although the origional AirPort cards LOOK like PCMCIA cards, they are not. There are swapped pins, etc... You cannot use a standard PCMCIA card in the AirPort slot, nor can you use an AirPort card in a standard PCMCIA slot. I suppose it would be possible, but would require a significant about of fiddling about with the slot hardware, and possibly with the card as well.

As said on a different forum:

Secondly, old Airport cards are not standard PCMCIA. What looks like a duck is sometimes a cat in a duck costume.

Again, physically, the slots

Again, physically, the slots are identical, however, electrically they are slightly dfferent. AirPort cards only work in AIrPort slots, and, with the exception of one or two cards that are of very similar spec to the AirPort card, PCMCIA cards will not work in AirPort slots. So, yes, Lucent and similar WiFi cards may work, however, you are not going ot just be able to toss anything in there ahnd have it just work.

Direct quote from a MacGuides article

AirPort interface
The original AirPort interface card resembles a PC Card device and has a very similar form factor.

The card can physically fit in an actual PCMCIA slot, and PC Cards can fit in an AirPort slot, but the electrical interface is not idenetical. AirPort cards do not work in PCMCIA slots, and third-party PC cards usually do not work in a Mac's AirPort slot.

Beef up the springs and shoot PC cards at each other.

Beef up the springs and shoot PC cards at each other.

I actually had a laptop that would do that. It had an automated eject mechanism for the PCMCIA slots, and would quite literally shoot a card clear across the room.
