Apple portables (Newton, iPhone, iPod)

I'd like to make a suggestion to start a thread of Apple products for the small portable devices Apple made and will make.

These would be such devices as the Newton series, the ipod series, the iPhone series, and even the Quicktake camera, and such independant portable devices.

Kiwi revisited?

My concern would be that such a topic would be inundated with "OMG OMG WTF MY IPOD IS BROKE PLS HELP EMERGENCY OMG WTF!!!!!!" threads like we used to get on the Applefritter:Kiwi forum a few years ago.

All new single-post members looking for free tech support for the same problems over and over and over. None of the vital information we need to be able to help them (iPod model, iTunes version, operating system, what troubleshooting have they done), and nothing but "You ppl suck" when (surprise, surprise) we're not able to help.

I seem to recall one particular person who posted at like 2:00 in the morning, then reposted several times minutes apart ("Hello? Anybody there?"), then finally posted an angry "YOU PPL SUCK" when no one had responded by 5:00 am. Real rocket scientist, this guy.

I used to try to read and respond to those threads where I felt like I might be able to offer some help, but quickly gave up on my Quixotic quest. It was the same advice over and over (reset? restore? reinstall iTunes?), and no one would listen or even check existing threads before posting new ones.

I agree we need a separate section for iPhone/iPod/Newton, but it needs to be properly managed and moderated.

Volunteers? Acute

I, too, tried to help out in Kiwi, but it was like widdling upstream against a tide of HALP! MY IPOD BROKEN ANDSWER NOWS!!!, often with the answer to their question one or two posts above, or in their manual, or other sites, or inside their tiny little brains if they only stopped to use them before posting.
Too much work, too much trouble. But that's just my opinion and not official.

I suspect you'd get the same with an iphone forum, too.

Plus, there are iphone/ipod forums out there already, while there are few good retro Apple sites remaining.

Newton posts? Good idea, but given the small amount of traffic on AF nowadays, could it not easily fit within the existing Other Tech for what few discussions there would likely be?

Kiwi got killed due to its ridiculously low signal-to-noise ratio. While there were sections for Mac and software help, 99% of posts were iPod problems; the vast majority of those were repeats of the same problems, with answers easily available with a quick Google search. I'm all for helping folks with their tech problems, but I'm not sure we want to open the floodgates again.

Not fair.....

Max, Thats not fair.
I usually stay in in the background concerning this kind of thing,as I am but a small contributer and I enjoy the variety of subjects on 'Fritter, but I have to agree with everyone else on this one.

It would have to be moderated.

Yes. I am an Apple II guy, but I don't ask for new forums to be started. I believe that almost everything I need to know is already covered here.

Thats just my two cents worth..... Smile

We already have one section dedicated to the Apple II; I don't think we'll be adding another any time soon.

How about Apple Portables less covers (Newton Series)

How about Apple Portables less covers (Newton Series Only)

I'd be willing to help out in any way I could but my time is limited.

Apple Tablets...

Looking all this over, I can see a tablet form factor forum. While there are many portables as I thought about it (laptops, luggages, etc) which could be covered in other areas, what we need is a tablet form factor area that would cover the iPhone and Newton. What was the Kiwi? Have to look that up.

If the questions are the same, we collect the answers, make a FAQ, and post that when the same question is answered.

Would not mind helping at all. Smile I like Apple Fritter and it has given a lot of help to me over the years. I know a decent amount of Newton this and that, so would be glad to contribute that. And moderate (I think is the word you were waiting for.) Wink
