Well as anyone who bought one of Apple's new eMac will now know, the speaker grilles are non-removable.

HA.

15 seconds' work a speaker, get a sharp, pointed object and PRY. They pop out with so little force... it's a wonder Apple's design department doesnt get sacked. Tongue
I reccomend everyone does this; it eliminates about 50% of the case vibrations, and makes the sound a lot heavier and clearer. Smile

Uh, the fact that you took them off, and the fact that third party companies sell different covers, I think they are officially "removable" !!! Shock

Something else that works wel

Something else that works well is getting a paperclip and bending the last 1/8th inch at a 90º angle with a pair of pliers. poke it inside one of the outer holes and pull. *pop* they go Smile

these are removeable... my emac came with them partially in so i could take them out with my finger or press them in. my dad prefers to have them in since i got an ibook recently and i dont need my emac. i like having them out for better acoustics.

eMac grilles

Apple markets them as non-removable, and if you look at them, they are certainly NOT designed to come off. If you mean a **new** eMac has shipped with the grilles half-in-half-out that's actually a manufacturing defect.

Remember: 700MHz- removable grilles, 800MHz-1.25GHz- non-removable grilles. As far as I know.

yup- like I said- that's the original, GOOD eMac design with the VERY decent speaker system(harman/kardon) and purposely removable grilles.. The second design as seen on the newest eMac has a trash sound system with no-name speakers directly attached to the case(no speaker boxes or anything) and 'permanently' fixed speaker grilles.

I've experienced both

My brother has the original eMac and not only do the speaker grilles come out, they also look a hell of a lot different. The holes are about 4 times larger than the newer ones, and they are much thinner. I had no idea that Apple advertised the new speaker grills as non-removable! If I had know that, I wouldn't have tried to take them out of my new one. I did manage to get them out with a paper clip, but it required way too much force and as soon as I took them out, I put them back in because it looked really goofy without them. Also, where can these third party speaker grilles that have been mentioned be found?

Thanks!

kids

It's because the target market for the eMac was schools. It was only an afterthought to sell it to the general public. The grills were beefed up because kids were pulling them out and then ruining the speakers.

Since this thread came up, I

Since this thread came up, I decided to go ahead and remove mine again just for fun. For those of you wanting to try it, I found a much easier method that using a paper clip or "prying". Take a bulldog clip and remove one of the silver arms. Take the arm and stick the one of the sides into a hole on the very outer ring. Take something like a small screwdriver (one of the "tight space", Z-shaped ones if you have one) and stick in in the top space of the bulldog arm thing. Pull. They pop out very easily, and you don't feel like you're destroying them either.
