Penguin Power Packs a Punch

If you want something to do this summer, learn about Linux, install it, and use it as a network file server if you need it. Or you could use it as a music box.

Any old box (even pre-pentum, if you can tolorate watching make and make install take forever...) will work fine for linux. I would also try out beOS too, just to see what it's like. Ooo! And try BSD, since well, it's my avator. Wink

Beginner's distro

RedHat 8 or 9 is probably a good beginner's distro. If you can find it, one of the "Red Hat for Dummies" books will teach you a lot about the basics of Linux.
And the UK magazine "Linux Format" also has some great stuff, as well as 2-3 coverdiscs or one DVD of software.

Linux Format usualy has a boo

Linux Format usualy has a bootable cd (knopplix?) bundled with the mag. If you can't download a distro, and don't want a permint install, try knopplix. The only problem is that you can't save to the cd, but IIRC, you can save to the hard drive (NTFS and FAT32).

Knoppix

The latest release of Knoppix (3.4, I think) does not have the harddisk installer tool present in previous versions (3.3 and 3.2 had it, dunno about others). The problem is that 3.4 is the one that has kernel 2.6
Another good bootable distro is Damnsmall Linux. That can run off of one of those mini-CD-R's and loads into RAM. It has an installation tool, but it is text-only.
