BeaSD

I tend to have quite a bit of unused computer equipment laying around my house, this is one of my attempts to consolidate it and make something usefully.  Basically this is a Quadra 610 motherboard and power supply with a 1.2 gig SCSI hard drive in the box that my DSL modem came in.

Here is the DSL box alone, as you can see some cuts have already been made to accommodate components.

Here is the hard drive and the PS, these are the first components to be "installed" in the box.  As you can see this is a very precise and time consuming procedure:

Next, the final ingredient is added.  A Quadra 610 motherboard with a full 68040 thrown in for good measure.

Thats about all there is to the hardware aspect of this hack.  I cut holes for all the ports I needed to use, and two more to cool the processor (high tech cooling for that hot running 040!) and to let the ram stick up above the box so that it could close.

As far as software goes the BeaSD is running a minimal install of system 7.5.3, after ten seconds it kills Mac OS and boots into Net BSD 1.6 (hence the name).

Most of the time the BeaSD runs headless in my basement acting as a file server and and a tool for me to learn a little bit more about UNIX like systems.  Here is a picture of the BeaSD in its native habitat:
