Every now and then I see stories like this:

and I wonder, since the impressive debut with the Virginia Tech cluster, how come I never see these sorts of deals going to Apple? I'm just curious.

Apple won the bid for the Arm

Apple won the bid for the Army Super COmputer. Its run on xServes, although I forget how many. Basicallly it goes up for bid. And anybody who has a machine that can do it will place one.

Upgrading the VaTech cluster...

Isn't Virginia Tech going to replace the G5's with xServes? To save space and energy (electrical and cooling)?

Wonder where the G5's will go...back to Apple maybe for their factory refurbished program?

They are if they haven't alre

They are if they haven't already. I think they made the decision before the orginal cluster was even finished - guess they had to put it together while waiting for the X-serves though. Last I heard, the G5s were to be dispersed around campus. Which makes me wonder where all the current Macs will go Smile VT collects all its surplus items in what used to be a large store in an old strip mall in town. The university must like putting empty commercial property to use - their largest computer lab practically fills what used to be a Sears in a mall near campus.

Several auctions are held during the year and things go CHEAP. They put up lists online prior to each auction which is nice, but "PowerMac Computer" isn't too descriptive. I've gone before when in school there and made out great, but I'd have to know there were some things worth making the trip for to go to one these days.

VT took out the G5 Towers in January and sold them exclusively on MacMall.com. They replaced them with 1100 dual proc 2.0Ghz G5s, now there upgrading again with faster (2.3Ghz) xServes.
