Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone out there ever used IBM's OS/2.

Back when Windows 3.1 was current, I bought OS/2 2.11 on floppies. If memory serves me, it was on 23 diskettes, including a Windows 3.1 installation (WIN-OS2).

I also used OS/2 Warp 3 for a while, and it was much easier to use than version 2.

After several years, I switched to Win95 because I started to write programs for a living and my employer used Windows.

I still have CDs for OS/2 Warp 4 and an install of it on Virtual PC for Windows.

Oooh...

One of those 'hole- in- the- wall' cash machines down the road from me screwed up a few months ago and started rebooting itself RIGHT WHEN I NEEDED MONEY- and that was when I found out that they run OS/2 Warp... it has a really cool startup screen! Laughing out loud

What does it run?

It can run programs for the following platforms:

  • Windows 3.x
  • OS/2
  • Win32 with the help of a program called ODIN-not all programs will convert at the present time.
  • DOS

Unfortunately, I didn't have too many third-party program when I used it a lot, mainly:

  • SPC ColorWorks (bitmap editor)
  • IBM Works (MS Works/Appleworks-type program - came with Warp 4)
  • InJoy (shareware internet dialer, allowed modem sharing)
  • PFS Works for OS/2 (similar to IBM Works, bought when I used v2.11)
  • VisPro VX-REXX (development environment that I never got the hang of)
  • Computer Associate's CA-Realizer (VB-type BASIC IDE for OS/2 and Windows - kind of a cross between VB and Pascal, had some nice functions)
  • Galactic Civilizations (real-time strategy game from Stardock Software)

Some programs are still developed for it, but mostly open-source stuff like Mozilla. Another source for programs is http://www.netlabs.org/.

It's currently sold as part of ECS, whose real meaning eludes me at the moment.

I won't say which companies trash truck they fell off of, but I've got install CDs for some hole-in-the-wall cash machines. They're for newer ones that use Celeron 566-833, and they run Win2k. I've noticed several of the machines around here are upgrading from green screen CRTs to color LCDs. I'm guessing they are also going from OS/2 to Win2k in that process. I've got some old ca. 1992 custom 386 mobos from the same trash truck route that I'm sure were some of the original OS/2 capable cahs systems. I've been meaning to get some pinouts and boot one up with the 1GB drives that came with them.

I remember the first time I saw a color ATM. It was back around 1988-1989 or os. I was working in Norwalk, CT and i had to get cash. Went to the machine and was wowed by the color. I'm surprised that all of them aren't all color by now. Everytime i see an old green one, it brings back memories of days gone by.
