Is it possible to stop a PowerBook Aluminium going to sleep when you close the lid?

Yes

Yes, use either NoSleep (never got it to work myself, but it might work for you) or another program which lets you keep your computer from sleeping when the lid is shut or when it should go to sleep automaticalle, but i can't remember what it is called...

Insomnia?

There was an apple extension way back when that kept laptops from sleeping when installing a OS. It was called Insomnia.
