Talking Macintosh SE/30

Hey!

I recently came across an article in the April 1984 issue of "Creative Computing" magazine that said when Steve Jobs unveiled the Macintosh to the world at the "Boston Computer Show" in January of the same year, the Macintosh 128K stunned the audience by talking about itself and handing the floor back to Steve!!!!

So this got me to thinkin'....
If A Macintosh 128K can talk, *surely* my Macintosh SE/30 should be able to sing & dance! lol

My questions are:
1] How do I access this feature?
2] Is there special software that I need?
3] Is there software *for* the voice that makes it do
cool & unusual things?

Later!

MacinTalk

The "Feature" is calles MacinTalk. It's part of all MacOSes (given you installed all components) There are several Voices included.
Btw. Mac OS X can talkt, too. Just open TextEdit (or SompleText in older OSes) and then you'll have to go though the menues. In one there is a Speak (or something like that) option. You can set the Voice used in the MacinTalk contol panel in classic or in the Speech contol panel (with the little microphone icon) in OSX.
And yes, the mac can Sing. Try some of the voices included (Good News, Bad News, Chellos...)

Have fun

P.S. There is also something called "Speakable items" with which you can actually TELL the mac what to do

talking Macs

Hey,

First off, Jobs lied. It wasn't a 128k Macintosh. It actually had a 512 mobo in it. So much for the reality distortion field.

Here's where to get the poop on getting your SE/30 to talk:

Thank You, William!

Hey!

That was a funny revelation about that evening!
But how do you *know* that, though?

And thank you for that link that you were kind enough to provide!

talking 512

Hey,

I don't remember where exactly I got the information about the talking Macintosh but it's a well-worn story in vintage Apple circles. It shouldn't be too hard to run down the source. If I was going to publish the information I would take the time to find a reliable reference.
