yes/no...

...would it fit?

yes, *provided* that you have something the right size and it physicaly fits.

...drive it with the SE?

no. the SE does not even use XGA. I asked a similar question not long ago and got some info that may answer some of your questions here. http://www.applefritter.com/node/6525.

I may be a litle off, but from what I understand, youw would need a color CRT that has compatible inputs to the stock CRT. This may be impossible to find if such an animal ever there was.

SE = 68000 CPU = "Color Impossible"

IIRC, the original 68000 Macs cannot do color (can't run Color Quickdraw?), so you'd need at the very least an SE/30 logic board and a color-capable PDS video card (not so easily found nowadays.) Even with those bits, I have never heard of an internal color display in an SE-form-factor box driven from an SE-form-factor logic board.

In theory I suppose a PDS video card could have its external output routed to an internally mounted (complete) 9" color display. How an SE/30 would deal with a missing original display, I haven't a clue.

For the SE/30 there was of course the very rare Xceed PDS video card coupled with the extremely rare internal grayscale adapter, not color but a rather nice upgrade from black and white.

IMO your best solution is to rip out the SE's guts and replace the whole shebang with something else . . . say . . . a miniMac? Cool Mac

Not necessarily impossible. . .

From LowEndMac.com:

"Color? Aura Systems made ScuzzyGraph II, a SCSI peripheral that provided 8-color video for people who didn't want to buy (or couldn't afford) a Mac II. 1989 cost was $995-2,495, depending on resolution."

The LC I/II/III/475 motherboard would fit inside a compact mac without any troubles IIRC. They are the same dimensions (as my Classic mobo at least) but with two extra bits of board that stick out around the fan. With abit of light modification to the chassis of the SE you could fit one inside without too many troubles. So you could possibly drive the display with one of those, and they are fairly cheap now.

yes...

...the uprade path for the SE is to replace the mobo with that of an SE/30. Refer to dankephoto's remarks for how to get color from that point forward.

re-cased iMacs

...if you notice the CD door in the backs of each machine - that is the tray from a 233/266 iMac. It is very possible that these are also sporting the Sonnet G4 upgrade. This can also be confirmed by noting that the configuration of the connecotrs (and even visible mobo) is a perfect match to the early iMacs. The TFT reference is to the fact that they have hooked a stand-alone LCD display to the mobo.

The SE does not have Color Quick Draw - so there is no way to add color to it. The first compact Mac to have Color Quick Draw is the SE/30 - but even then you need a color video card and an external monitor. The Exceed card mentioned above works great. I have one. In fact, I used to have a dual monitor system (the internal running in grey scale and the external running color) back when the wintel kids where still trying to figure out where to plug in their mouses. This was great for programming since you could run the debugger on the internal monitor and the target app on the external.

Back to your problem though - just get a color classic off ebay, paint it beige and call it good.
