so what . . .

can I do with this mindblowing revelation? I was playing with a newly acquired blacklight . . .

It looks really cool, I'll post a pic when I get a chance.

Hey, turns out Pismo kb letters glow too, and my entire iBook 700 keyboard glows quite brightly, keycaps and all! Damn, this is trés cool!

I gotta get me some UV LEDs! I'm thinking some sort of hidden KB illuminator, maybe built-in to the display frame, or ???

BTW, is the blacklight (purplish flourescent tube) with which I'm playing dangerous at all? I've assumed it's not, but maybe I shouldn't be so blasé about it.

Longterm exposure to improper

Longterm exposure to improperly packaged UV lamps while they are on is carcinogenic, but as long as they are quality tubes then you should be OK. UV LEDs are rather expensive, that's all I have to say about them.

FlyLight

Why not replace the LED in one of those USB flex neck keyboard light thingies with an Infra red LED? I dunno, might be easier said than done, i ruined one trying to replace the white LED with a red one, so now it's sitting in peices on my desk.

IR is the opposite end of the light spectrum. It won't make things glow. Unless of course you are looking at stuff with night vision goggles. They do make uv leds so that would work.

re: Looking at UV leds can be . . .

dangerous? All UV LEDs? Or just those with shorter wavelengths?

Keep in mind, as k00L as this looked under my blacklight, I'm not really up for frying myself under a portable laptop-equipped UV-eyeblaster. :coolmac:

Still, the basic idea of having an illuminated KB without lighting up the whole area is quite atractive. And the UV glow is very very cool looking.

Hmmm, I wonder if the key printing would glow if illuminated from underneath . . .

glowing keyboard

I was able to build a backlit iBook keyboard that will work with g3 and g4 iBooks. I took the keyboard from a g3 iBook, removed the plastic labels on the back, and installed the fibre optics from a backlit keyboard PowerBook G4. Only problem is that the backlit was powered from an internal usb connection on the iBook G4 logic board (trackpad and bluetooth option utilize an internal usb connector, which resulted in it being on even when the iBook was off.
