Since this forum section includes some dialog from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in its' title, I'm surprised that nobody here has yet commented on the new film.

I went and saw it a week ago. It was fine, I suppose. Douglas Adams consistently made each incarnation worse than the previous one;

1)Radio series
2)TV series
3)Book series
4)Film (series?)

It seems that the film is making plenty of money, and you know what that means: a sequel will come. And they even mention going to the restaurant at the end of the universe.

Disappointments about the film include that they dumbed it down, and had several references to the earlier incarnations with no or weak pay-offs. To me the main one of these was when the pan dimension beings are about to ask the Deep Thought Computer for the ultimate answer, and there is a minor ruckus outside the gate, they look back over their shoulders at it, and nothing happens (instead of a couple irate philosophers breaking in to complain, as in all of the previous incarnations.)

What are your deep thoughts?

...uhhh...

I want to see it, but I seldom have deep thoughts, being a bear of little brain...

Hmmm. I have a rumbly in my tumbly.

Time to take a dive in the honeypot.

it sucked

Quite simply I was VERY dissapointed. The characters were portrayed poorly, a lot of the "plot" was made up, and much was cut from the books. In the end, It was a perfectly fine movie. But if youve read the books, it was dissapointing

I haven't been that concerned

I haven't been that concerned, because I've assumed that, as usual, a big budget spectacular movie adaptation fails. I don't honestly remember much from the radio series, but after re-viewing the tv adaptation a few years ago (with its hilariously hokey '80s special effects), I realized that that Marvin could never be topped so what's the point?

Marvin the Paranoid Android from the TV series

The Marvin robot from the TV series makes a cameo appearance, waiting in line at a Vogon bureaurocracy, as does Simon Jones as the Magrathean message machine.

It was kind of dumbed down.

I saw it on Thurs. w/ my wife

I saw it on Thurs. w/ my wife and my sister. Only my wife hasn't read the series. I was disappointed about how the story was changed to make it more Hollywood (badluck Arthur actually gets the girl? Comeon, that's a copout on his whole charater deveolpment...) but the casting in a few cases was great. Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin was great. He's got that slightly whiney Brit accent that works very well.

I didn't know that. Who came up with that description, anyway?

Someone in IRC, you came in one night and said you wanted a forum for all this unrelated stuff that kept showing up in Other Tech. We batted around some ideas, and eventually settled upon Life, The Universe, And Everything Except Computers (or whatever it is). You rather liked it as I recall.

I haven't seen the film, but

I haven't seen the film, but I can't imagine it can compare with the dry wit of the books. It seems that Hollywood is scratching around for any story it can push into a film. I have to admit the trailers are actually smart and funny... it stinks that no one really loved it.
