How many slots hath a G4?

I just added 512MB of RAM to a 733MHz Quicksilver G4 (1GB now!), and mentally noted that there were three memory slots on the logic board. I fired it up to ensure that all was well, and the extra stick was recognized and all was indeed well. But when I opened up Apple System Profiler, it tells me that there are FOUR slots;

Memory Slot Size Type Speed
DIMM0/J21 512MB SDRAM PC133-333
DIMM1/J22 256MB SDRAM PC133-333
DIMM2/J23 256MB SDRAM PC133-333
DIMM3/J24 Empty Empty Empty

I even opened the thing up again to double check, and yes, Martha, there are only three. Anybody else see this? Anybody know what's up with this?

Sys

I to have a 733 mhz (overclocked to 933 mhz) with 1.5 gigs of ram. I could just be that that one goes away once you have 1.5 gigs of ram. I had the same problem when I had 1 gis also.

PS. Who did you buy the ram from or did you get 1 gig with it?

Re: Sys

The RAM isn't the problem; I have three sticks of RAM in the three slots on the logic board, but System Profiler shows that there are four slots. My question is, is System Profiler screwing up on this machine, reporting that there are four slots when there are really three, or is there a fourth slot on the board that I don't know about?

phantom slot

I could just be that the original design called for four slots, but Apple opted to only put in three and left the fourth stubbed off in umpteen-dozen different places around the board (like the mezz port on Rev C & D iMacs - although the pads were left intact).

That seems very likely to me.

That seems very likely to me. I've never heard of a memory controller that only will work with 3 slots and not 4.

Anybody else...

... have a Quicksilver that shows the same results in System Profiler? I'd love to know if this is something that is screwing up on this particular machine if DDTM is right and the thing was designed with four slots but they only put three to use.

I have the same question...

I have dual 533 G4 and went to add a new 512mb stick to the fourth "empty" slot... only to discover there's only 3 slots. So I chucked the old 128 stick... but was a little frustrated that the system profiler told me there were four slots... not three.

Did anyone figure out what the deal is?
Is it a System profiler screwup, or what?
