KDS monitor fraking out...

Purchased a G3 Powermac with a KDS 15 inch monitor. Computer is up and running fine but the monitor is giving me trouble. It works fine but frequently goes bonkers on me, the display gets distorted and scrolls rapidly with horizontal lines across it like a TV with the V-hold all messy. I checked the power cord which is attached, and it does this wether connected to the tower or not.

However if I slapp the back of it (technical I know) it goes back to normal and works fine. I tried to take the cover off but could not. What could this be? Is it just on its way out and I got a bum deal or is something loose?

Thanks -

Why bother?

My experience with monitors and tv's has been, when you reach the point where you have to whack it to get it to work, that's a good indication that it's days are very numbered. When I went looking for monitors a few months ago, I went down to Office Depot to check their KDS monitors which they seem to always have on "sale" and they looked pretty crappy, and those were the 17in. and 19in. versions. Why would you bother with a dying 15in. KDS when you could probably go down to Goodwill and pick up a bigger Sony for $10?

Oh, by the way...

Tinkering around inside a monitor can kill you. There's a capacitor in there that can turn you into a shishkabob. (How's that spelled?)

Shishkabob

You spelled it right, but your choice of words I don`t agree with.

The voltage inside a CRT monitor`s high-voltage transformer,
flyback assembly, and in the CRT itself can all kill you.

Put together, I guess they can turn you into a piece of charcoal.

When I used to fix iMacs (pre-LCD iMac), if I had to mess around with any of that stuff, I wore rubber gloves. Don`t laugh - I`m still alive to type this.
