I recently had the oppurtunity to purchase a Titanium PB with an 867 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD all for $300! The downside.... The screen is shot which is why this friend wanted to get rid of it so quickly. Is there anyway to remove the screen as to be able to use an external monitor...
Which brings me to this: how do I go about connecting a VGA monitor to this so that I can use the laptop as a desktop? I believe cmd+7 is used for mirroring @startup but I would also like to use the external monitor as the default.
Therefore, if I could get help removing the monitor that would be great and also I would appreciate knowing how to connect an external VGA monitor and use it as the default display. (OS 9.2.x... will be installing Jaguar and later upgrading to either Panther or Tiger)

Don't bother ripping the screen off. Just attach USB keyboard and mouse, and keep the laptop plugged into the power supply and it'll operate in "clamshell" mode with the lid shut. (That automatically disables the internal screen and allows arbitrary resolutions on the monitor port.) The only trick is turning it on. Opening the lid, smacking the button, and slamming shut again it seems to work adequately.
As for attaching a VGA monitor, get a DVI to VGA dongle. The Apple ones are about $20, but you can do better then that.

I guess this is working just fine. I wonder: do you think one of the older first gen iMac keyboards would work to turn this on since they have the power button built right into the keyboard?
Running a laptop while it's closed isn't always a good idea. Most of them really need the surface of the keyboard to lose the generated heat.

Apple built the "Clamshell" mode into the hardware as a *feature*. That implies at least that *Apple* thinks operating the Titanium hardware with the lid closed is acceptable.
If you're really paranoid just suspend the thing on its side (without blocking the ventilation slots) or on feet so air can circulate underneath it.

I found that when you run the titanium powerbook closed, because the screen is off apparently, much less heat get generated anyway. I am interested in taking the screen off, since the hinges are broken and installing the screen on the wall. Has anyone tried this?
