So my Powermac G3 is dead. I went to Compusa and was able to order a previous gen Mac Mini for $463 after taxes (how I got charged tax on an online order is beyond me) Anyhow, I am beginning to second think my choice. It only comes with 256mb of RAM. As a student, I could get a new Mac Mini for $479 and it comes with 512mb of RAM. Here is my question, does Apple charge Tax on online orders like Compusa does? Also, will an Apple store install RAM for me without voiding my Applecare? I may still have time to cancel my order if it is the right thing to do.

You do not get charged tax online with apple. As for installing the ram, i am not sure, but the last time i checked i they will install it if you buy the ram from them.

Depends on where you live. If there is an Apple Store or a warehouse of theirs in your state, you'll get charged sales tax.

Problem solved. I went to the refurbed section and found a Mini with the same specs, but with 512mb of RAM insted of 256. There was indeed tax, but the total cost came up $1.16 cheaper than the Compusa one I had ordered. I cancelled the Compusa order and am now getting the refurb from Apple. Same price, double the RAM. Works for me.

It'd be interesting...

... to see just how much sales tax that is collected in online purchases actually makes it back to the purchaser's home state.

I think that's the intent, that sales tax is collected according to the state the order is to be shipped to. But I've heard of several cases of normal stores failing to pay the state the sales tax they have collected, and it usually happens when someone gets turned in, not when the state tracks them down. It would be very difficult for any state to verify who has sold how much online and shipped to what state.

Not that a high-profile outfit like Apple would do something like that to boost their bottom line, but I'm sure there are lots of other online sellers who would.
