How to set CD-224e drive as master for my 1400

I have been getting tired of my two CD drives flaking in my PowerBook 1400c. They read about 75% of the disks I throw at them, when I can't pull some files off of one it drags the system to a crawl and is a PITA. A few months ago (when I had any money!) I bought a new TEAC CD-224e drive for about $15 just in case... so I decided that this was the time.

It was easy to open the old case and swap out the mechanism, it fit nearly perfectly. Except that the new drive has a small metal lip near the front. I fixed by Dremeling about 3mm off of the exterior metal case, then the new drive fit in perfectly.

When I start my PowerBook now, it boots very slowly, like abouty twenty minutes. Then it runs normally. System Profiler shows a CD-ROM drive there, but no manufacturer nor firmware info. When I put CDs in the drive, it spins up nicely - much quieter than the previous drives. But it won't mount a CD! The only thing I can think of which might be an issue is setting the Master/Slave/CableSelect. I am looking at the PCB inside of the drive, but I can't find anything which is obviously a jumper. Does anybody have any experience with setting these things? I am sure that a dot of solder will do it, but currently I have no idea where.

How about my page on the general subject? Plus here's my page on modding the Lombard/Pismo interface board to force Master status, showing the shunt of pins 45 & 47.

It works!

Hi Dan,

Indeed, I remember reading your EBM page a few months ago, it's great. Last night I found a preliminary spec sheet for the CD-224e which described the pin 47 deal. If it's high, the drive is set to master. If it's low, the drive is set to slave. Pins 45 and 49 though are marked "reserved", so I wouldn't have guessed this without directing my coffee nerves toward holding some probes on that little connector. So connecting pins 45 and 47 sets it as slave, which works fine. I was thinking master because I assumed the media bay was a different IDE bus than the main HD, maybe they are really the same bus then.

Thank you for pointing out the mod, even with a great big picture for maximum clarity!

BTW, reading on your EBM pages about your attempts to use CDR and CDRW drives in the 1400... I was reading some board about NuBus LINUX stuff. A guy said that he was able to burn CDs on his 1400 with the Charismac "Discribe" demo. Something I am anxious to try.

Well, I'm glad it worked . . . but, I thought doing that jump set it to Master. Well, I've always been a little confused about this dealy. Are you sure it's now Slave? Check in Apple System Profiler for the device ID.

As for burning, I haven't tried Discribe. The only version I have is Sony-drive-specific. Blum 3

Both devices ID 0

Not much info in the System Profiler, basically just says that there is a CD drive there. But it is listed as device 0, just as my hard drive is. I assume then that they are both masters of their respective busses.

Actually, the spec sheet said that the drive is master if pin 47 is high *or* open, which appears to not really be the case, as I believe it was open before. Can't wait to try a DVD-ROM/CDRW drive sometime later!

Same Problem

Hello, I have the same problem, how did you do to connect the pins? Could you share the information, did you do it directly on the CD module or on the board that connects to the CD? Best regards
