These questions are directed only at Type 2 PC Cards that leverage GSM technology, as one would use for a wireless model, or as a cell phone when pluging a headset directly into the card.

Does anyone know if most/all GSM PC cards output audio at line level?

And does anyone know if the mics work at line level also?

TIA

c'mon

surely there is someone out here who has messed with these things?

I have a hack/mod I want to do to a Newton MP 2x00 and was thinking I could internally patch the Line in/Line out from the interconnect port to the GSM card. This would require minor mods to both Newton and card, but I was a little concerned about the attenuation on the GSM cards.

The end result is I will have access to the internal mic and speaker for the GSM card, thus enabling FULL cell phone capabilities for any like-modified GSM card.

Yeah, I can go look at every single GSM card I can find and check the specs on the earpiece jack, or I can ask and hope someone has a quicker answer.

OK, I'll bite. :) The answer

The answer is that some GSM cards have headset jacks. It looks like the Sierra Wireless GSM PCMCIA card is just what you're looking for-- the review I found cites the AirCard 750, but that's bound to have changed by now. I don't know anything about Newton drivers, either, but this website ( http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=newtontalk&m=103607995621630&w=2 ) looks like a good lead. I wouldn't count on stellar data performance from any of the cards you would find.
