Beige g3 500, onto a B/W G3???

Ok, so I saw a handy topic about a user putting a BW proc into a beige box...what I want to do is the opposite.

I have a bw g3 with a 300 in it. The label on the back claims its a bw g3 server 450...but its a 300 installed. Also curious, it has a yellow jumper block on it the speed jumpers (but it could have been modified to work with the 300.

What I want to do is install my g3 500 into the b/w, is that possible?? I fear that with the documentation that I have searched and found, that it won't be....

It all depends on whether that CPU can run on the B&W's 100 MHz bus. A stock beige G3 CPU will not.
Since you say your beige CPU is running at 500 MHz, I'm assuming it's not stock. Are there any labels or stamps on the CPU to identify it?

I didnt think it would, and after attempting it, I know its not. The G3 from the beige box is a Newer Tech g3 g3 upgrade, and I can't believe that I never really noticed it before. Hm. No wonder the old beige box was getting smoked by the g3.

Oh well....guess I'll keep an eye out on ebay for a sonnet g4 upgrade for it.

XLR8 ZIFs

You might want to check the Daystar XLR8 G4 ZIF's instead. I could be wrong, but I think they are all around better than the Sonnets, and the jumpers are on the ZIF itself, bypassing the motherboard jumpers, and the XLR8 software is pretty good. Just do a search for XLR8 at eBay.

Beige G3 500

Any G3 Zif will run on the B&W G3 but it may not run at the speed it's running on the beige. Only the much faster Zifs that I have seen run at 66MHz bus in the B&W's, not the slower ones like 500MHz.

You may get more CPU speed or less depending on the chip but it will work. And if you are using Apple's system profiler to read the beige G3 speed don't because it doesn't read upgrade CPU's too well. Try NewerTechs guagePro to check the true speed.
