appleshare and multiplayer problems

ive got my AIO g3 and Yikes! g4. im trying to get the 2 of them to talk together so i can play a multiplayer game of marathon. they are both running the exact same OS9 and version of the game, all fresh installs. i have them hooked up to a 10baseT router and the lights all show up but nobodys home. i cant figure it out, ive tried different routers, different cables, installed os a few times on both. nothing seems to work. i dont know whats going on. ive done this before with older macs than this so it cant be the age. the game is fully supported on both machines and so is ethernet. im tearing my hair out here trying to get files to share between them aswell. always before in the chooser i could see the other computers i was trying to play with or connect to but now i cannot. has anyone ever ran into this before? both machines also have default installs of OS 9.2.1 thanks in advance

You've probably already checked these, but ...

I'm sure you've already done this, but it never hurts to double-check:

1) Go to the AppleTalk control panel; select "connect via Ethernet," and "make AppleTalk active."

2) Go to the File Sharing control panel and make sure File Sharing (maybe even Program Sharing) is on.

3) Get Info on your hard drives and make sure they're shared (play with the user permissions a bit).

4) Now go to the Chooser and see whether you can see the other Mac.

Hope this helps!

ok so basically ive done all

ok so basically ive done all the steps you spoke of. when i select ethernet in the appletalk control panel i get this which im guessing means something isnt right somewhere.. but i couldnt tell you where.. only thing i havnt changed is the network cards on each of the machines. right now they are the built in ones. im so stumped here....

EDIT : i dont know what happened but i think rebooting 3 times had somthing to do with it after i changed all those settings you said to change. but the important thing is it works and works fast! very nice and thanks for the help.
