Jaguar + AirTunes?

Here's the deal...

I got this nifty AirPort Express yesterday. It's a beast, more feature rich than I could ever explain in words. More loaded than Apple's AP Express site claims, etc. Can't say enough good things about it.

However, iTunes won't stream to it from my Wallstreet. Not that it's that huge of a deal, because my main MP3 repository resides on a Winblows box which can sufficiently stream music to the Express just fine.

The problem revolves around the fact that iTunes won't even look for remote speakers unless it's running on Panther or Tiger (or higher) That means that my PBG3 is screwed, since I can't seem to shoe-horn anything other than Cheetah, Puma or Jaguar onto it (I think Panther won't install without seeing USB ports and Tiger likewise with FireWire, IIRC -- neither of which my Wallstreet has)

So, my fellow Mac Hackers, I ask of thee: What's the best way to make this work?

Is it possibly a software limitation that Apple intentionally built into iTunes to grab customers by the short and curlies, strongarming them into paying to upgrade their OS (knowing full well that they make the OS's so they don't run on older Macs, forcing them to possibly upgrade their apple computer as well?)

If it's a software limitation in iTunes, do you think it could be hacked?

Or is it possibly a limitation in the implementation of the Rendezvous API which may have changed post-Jaguar to include remote speaker functionality?

Oh heck I'll come right out and ask this too: What's the feasibility of shoe-horning Panther onto this wallstreet with XPF4?

Jon, you up for a fun project this week? I'm off work during the day till Jan 3.

panther and tiger will install on your wallstreet.

here is what you need to do:

1. back up your data on your WS.
2. install OS 9 (or boot into 9 if you have it on a seperate partition. classic in OS X wont work.)
3. install this freeware programme called xpostfacto 4. I dont have a link, google for it.
4. after installing and running XPF, run the panther/tiger installer disk.
5. enjoy.

what XPF does is bypass the bootstrap requirements of panther/tiger. this allows you to run these OSes on older machines, so long as they have a G3 processor in them, and allotta ram.

Upgrading the OS...

yes,I mentioned XPF4 in my post. It says there might be some issues with the video drivers.

I can't just throw 10.3 or 10.4 on, it freaks out and says my system isn't compatable, which is why I need XPF. Smile

I don't have a whole lot on the drive, fortunately. Some MP3's that were copied from my main repository, Audacity and firefox is just about it. I'll probably just nuke from orbit and try it that way. Only problem is my wallstreet doesn't have a DVD Drive. I know Tiger's on DVD.

im sorry about that. I wasnt paying attention. as for the problem with the wallstreet not having a DVD drive, I THINK you can send the DVD in to apple, and request a CD set. only problem is they keep the DVD. so, you may want to back up the DVD and save it as an .iso image.

that trade in method was also for previous versions.

yep

In the tiger box, there is a coupon that you send in to apple along with $10 and the dvd and they send you a cd set.

On the phone we came up with

On the phone we came up with the idea of trying one of his SCSI slot-load DVD drives on the WS. Now THAT sounds like F.U.N.!
