new toy: eeepc

I had been posting before about buying an OLPC, but once I figured out what I was looking for in a sub-notebook/PDA, it looked more and more like the Asus eeepc was what I wanted.

Had a bit of Christmas money left, so I'm now posting from my new 2G Surf version.

First thoughts: cool. Small. Cool.

The keyboard will take some getting used to. It, too, is very small.

Haven't decided whether to keep the Xandros default install or go for Ubuntu (there's an optimised version for the eee pc) or XP.

G4 on hold - say hello to iBike

I've put my G4 project on hold until the new processor arrives...then I can determine whether or not I need a new logic board, or if I should bite the bullet and but a whole system to save me the trouble of sourcing the other parts I'll require.

In the meantime, to keep myself busy I've purchased plans (Link) for a recumbent bike made from 2 x 4s.

For parts I'll probably use my ancient Norco Bigfoot, a bike I purchased new back in 1985. I used to ride the indestructible bike everywhere, but it seems I no longer have the neck, wrists or the butt for the standard upright bicycle anymore.

Happy Ubuntu server...Yatta!

Pleased as punch, that's me.

I've successfully set up an Ubuntu server on an older Dell box.

I've used the fantastic instructions Here (Thanks, Jon Peck!)

I had to create a new share for torrents, because while I could access the share on OS X, no matter how simple I made the share, Windows wouldn't let me in. But creating a new share - with the exact same parameters and permissions - worked. edit - reason why is below

I've also installed squid, and sarg and webalyzer to monitor it.

I've also installed a small second drive and linked it into my home directory as a test. The plan is to buy a larger drive and use my PC's current drive in the server.

Keen.

I've played around with Ubuntu before, but never had much luck getting it to do everything I needed. I've also toyed with SME Server, Clarkconnect, and the impressive Smoothwall.

The learning experience has been great, and made for a quality geek weekend, and the amount of walkthroughs and tutorials on the web are Ubuntu's greatest asset.

YAERG - Yet Another Emate Repair Guide

Thanks to Doug-Doug the Mighty, I now have two emates - both in need of some repair work.

Using naming DDTM has established (and description text):
aka #55
Case Condition: Excellent.
Name Card: Present
Hinge: Needs work
Battery: Good
Display: Excellent
Touch Screen: Works
Stylus: No
Remarks: Hinges are not too bad but lid will fall shut when you are in the process of closing. From what I have seen so far, this may be as simple as tighening the screws holding the hinge to the motherboard and/or lid. It does tend to stay pu when at a viewable angle. Sound is weak through the speaker, not sure why.

aka #67
Case Condition: Good - Minor white scuffs that could be cleaned up with some effort. Cardbus slot missing lower door. Minor scuffing of Apple logo on top of lid.
Name Card: Missing
Hinge: Needs rebuilding/repair
Battery: Good
Display: Poor - Right half is bad, having horizontal lines running up to middle of display.
Touch Screen: Works - but apears affected by display issue above.
Stylus: No

What goes around...

A funny computer story for those who have a lot of systems and parts pass through their homes...

I went looking for a used laser printer or toner cartridge. My Laserwriter 16/600 was having some printing problems, and occasionally I'll see a printer for sale for far less than the cost of a toner cartridge.

So I picked up a used HP LaserJet 4 for $30. I take it back to work and start cleaning it with the compressed air, then power it up and print a config page.

Under the network name of the printer is "Giddy Kids Laserjet". Sunuvagun...I used to own this printer! Turns out, I bought back a printer I'd sold about three years ago at half the price. Still works like a charm.

Good thing, too. The fuser assembly in the Laserwriter is now shot.

Maybe I should sell it off, then I can buy it back in a few years when I need more parts...:)
