Personal Venture in the Forum Industry

After having to register a domain name and host for a friend that wants to start a business, I got to thinking about finding a dedicated host. Then I started to think about running a forum for customers and other people that I deal with and started to think that "Well, maybe this will become bigger"

Sooo... I ventured into the forum business. It's the first time I have actually run a forum. Been on a number for forums as a mod, but I actually have taken the seat to doing a forum admin.

Anyways, I am REALLY hoping it takes off, but am a bit disappointed after having to transfer hosts (now with the same company that I use for the domain name) and losing the first forums (of which i had people already signing up) I am scared I might now make it after 2 days and only having 9 people on board. Most of them have come over from 68kmla, and I thank them, but I don't know how to get the word out. I am looking at doing some adverts, because I know I have a lot to give to the internet in expertise. I run my own computer repair business and have seen forums that I john go down (shall we say) the "Crapper) like 68kmla where you don't know if it will load, or people become restless because of spam and people bashing each other on the forums. I really hope I never become like that, but it seems every great forum comes to that. But at the same time, i don't want to be a forum "Nazi" (sorry to offend, i mean it as being a total "a**-hole) and drive people off. Not my intention.

Anyways, I run the forum at http://www.troubleshootnow.com/
I am hoping people join, but I am not holding my breath either. I just need a bit of encouragement and a bit of a prayer to make it take off from the ground.

Wish me luck!

I never thought of myself as a manager...

I have been looking for a steady job for some time, and since I am not up on certification, I can't really get a job in the computer area right now. Although, i have managed my homebrew business, I have not been getting much business, as on occasions, some of my clients move (no one wants to be in this city) or I have not been able to advertise as much, and am probably not totally sure how to run a company right to get people. I started out with a lot of clients, mainly through reputation and the word_of_mouth advertising, but It has been getting slower, and have now found myself looking for work and shutting down the home business for now.

I started applying about 3 months ago, as a way to pay for college, and to support myself and hopefully get some money into my account. Until I found myself going for an interview with Target Corporation.

Now, i never considered a job in management, but I have now been offered a higher salary than I have probably had in my life up to this date, and find it kind of exciting to move to another area outside of my normal comfort zone, however, this places a lot on my plate that I have never wandered into the territory of. I am not even sure how I would do at the job, but am looking forward to seeing if I can make it within that.

I have an interview on Thursday @ 10am with the store head manager, and will be going through about 4-6 interviews and could take up to about 2-3 hours. depending on if I advance to the next level. I SO want the job, but am dreading at if I will fail at it, and now that I see my position being moved up to manager, i probably can't back down without there being no room for advancement in the future, having them think I can't handle the responsability.
So, right now, I am sitting scared at if I will make it, or if I will fail at it, and start the job search all over again, but with a major mark against me for being laid off due to not being able to accomplish a job that I was hired for.

I am used to working for myself, where I am leading myself and I know what decisions will affect me directly, but have never considered having people under me, and don't know what I would do if there was something major I had to confront. And it has made me lie awake the past few nights scared of what will happen.

I have a few friends that are managers, some with trucking companies, some with newspaper offices, and they have been successful, but they have had a lot of experience with dealing with people, and when they started, i remember hearing how hard it was to deal with people if they had to fire them. I am not the most tactful person that I know of, and I tend to have trouble telling people bad news. But it will come with the job if I have to make a decision like that.

I guess what I am saying, is I saw myself looking at a whole change of what my job career would be if I keep at this, and actually like it, or if I would fail and have to start all over again. A blemish on a career is NOT something you want to have when you are just starting. especially at the age of 22.

I'm sorry I am rambling in this blog, but it would feel better to get it off my chest on the internet than to tell some of my friends. yes, they are managers, but I have seen them take charge, and sometimes it scares me about what managers do. And I hope I will never become one that employees will hate...

Anyways, thanks for reading this, even if it is to ramble, and wish me luck!

Got a new Record player

I got a new record player yesterday, and I can't say how much I missed my last one. I got a denon Model 300-F turntable with computerized speed control. I can't believe how good the audio is compared to my last one (Then again, i spent $$400 with it (Came with an extra stylus)) I *love* the warmth of a record. For some reason, CDs are so sterile, and while they may be good as far as audio quality, nothing takes you back in time like a vinyl record. When I was younger, my mom and dad (when they were still married) used to dance the a Harry Nilsson Record (Albumn name "Harry") and you can no longer get the record (They didn't put it to CD) and I took it yesterday and put it to CD.

I will take a record over a CD anyday, because of the minor imperfections make them much more fun to listen to. While some may think it's a pain in the arse to get up and flip a record, i find that the best part of it. To be able to handle such fine crafted Platters and to do it manually. It's like an old computer. it's great to mess with the technology of Yester-years. I Can't say enough. If you are young enough to only remember CD's, i tell ya', there is nothing more fun than messing with old audio gear. HAM Radio people will tell you the same thing. Sure you can play with a Cell phone, but nothing connects you to old technology like playing around with Archaic equipment.

I have a victrola that I acquired recently with the death of my grandfather, and I love the thing. Something as simple as a piece of steel with a self-amplified speaker setup, can bring joy to old audio. Putting on an old ABBA Record is fun. And I wasn't around at that time when it was made!

All-in-all, i love the record player and the quality, and I love the feel of playing around with it. :)

Blue Man Group

Last night, the Blue Man Group stopped in at the Qwest Center in Omaha, NE. I can say that it is nothing short of spectacular. *LOT'S* of PVC Fun! The light staging was amazing, but too bad I couldn't get closer to the stage to see how the lighting was done.

The theme was as usual (Inside the Tube) and featured a lot of parodies and satirical comedy. Including the diet coke and mentos experiment on stage. if you don't know who the blue man group is, go here on wikipedia

The light show they used captivated me with the ways they did the color patterns. They were also working with a new experiment with text message, where they would send you little clues through text messages to get you "too the roof", which was one of the main focus's of it.

It starts out with the "How to put on a rock show" infomercial, in which the blue man group order the guide to put on a rock show. Basically the whole thing was followed through with comedy based on the guide, where they would get the audience involved with the act. Mainly through actions (getting the whole croud head-banging, jumping, and yelling) to further the theme.
If you want a run-down on what happens, look the the wikipedia.org link that I provided (it's not easy to describe what happened) and if you ever get a chance to go see them, DO IT! it is worth the money!

and hopefully this:

with hopefully a light hack about the Drive bays, as i don't have the floppy bezel (nor will i) and don't want one (Apple floppy drives are useless under OS X)

I have an 80GB 133MB's IDE HDD, sadly, it's still on the 16MB's bus :(.
It's got 384MB Ram, 6MB VRAM, and a 300MHz B&W CPU with 512KB L2 (2:3 speed) clocked to 417MB. The Logic Board runs at 83MHz FSB. On the back, it's got the "wings" card (broken, but soon to be fixed)
It sports a 5-port USB 2.0 PCI Card, a D-Link 530TX+ 10/100 Ethernet Card. A PCI Bay Dual Exhaust Fan system. And a Fancy 2GB Jaz drive (and the DVD-ROM w/ RAM Read capabilities) on the internal SCSI.

I got on the external:
USB 2.0 10GB External Desktop drive (with blue LED's on three sides (Front, left side, right side)
USB 2.0 Laptop 20GB
100MB Iomega Zip drive (SCSI) on the external SCSI 5MB's Bus.

notice: it doesn't have the drives mounted. also, not all the bezels are on. This is soon to be remedied. I will give one last update on the thread once the finishing stuff arrived. I will later post a topic on the light hack, as well once again update this thread too for the last part.

Plans: I hope that one day, i will Paint the Tower a Matte Black. And make me "Overclocked G3" (basically, a charcoal G3 name on a white sticker, with a Gray watermark seal over the G3 logo, with the Letters: "O.C." at an angle.

thanks for looking!

AIO to minitower project entry (big pictures!)

as i have posted on the forum, i am going to be taking my AIO's contents and throwing them into a Beige G3 MiniTower. I am just testing some things, should i need to do some unexpected stuff.

This is the Sled out of the AIO running on a compaq PSU:

This is the rocker switch on the PSU that has to be pushed for the system. Note: this means there is no softpower, yet....

sorry about the image quality on this and the one below:

The pic above is the prize that i had waited for for a week. Delays due to paypal and my bank frustrated me on it. It was $6.93USD Total with shipping in the USA. It is a 10 switch DIP adapter. Does TON's of settings. I would scan the paper in with the settings, if i had a scanner that worked....

Below:
this is the front of the AIO Tray. It has a 2GB Jaz drive, a floppy, and an LG DVD-ROM with DVD-RAM Reader (but no write :( )
I will someday get a video card for it that will allow me to play DVD's in OS X, and OS 9.

This is the top of the sled, on the right is the PSU, it's a Compaq PSU pulled out of a POS Desktop that had water damage to the board. I paid my friend $3 for it, pulled the floppy (now in my PC) the RAM, the 2GB IDE Drive, and the PSU, they have all come into good use, I still have the CPU on my shelf (233MMx Pentium [not P-2]):

This pretty much contains everything that will go into the minitower, c'ept an extra 10GB IDE Drive. That will go on the primary chain with the original Drive for OS X.

This has a D-Link 10/100 DFE-530TX+ PCI Ethernet card in the most right PCI Slot, as twin Fan PCI Slot cooler, and a 5-port Belking USB 2.0 card. Right now there is an Personality card it the special slot for the AIO systems. There is no monitor attached to it, to allow unlimited Resolutions to the outside Video (otherwise outside would max at 1024x768, i got the monitor working at 1152x864 or something now)

All in all, it's not much for a hack, but at least it will reduce my clutter when i am done. i will ship the sled to anyone that wants it when i am done, minus the computer stuff, and they would have to pay shipping.

From AIO to minitower. The body switch identity crisis

My AIO is having an identity crisis, and has decided to go thru a body change operation. As you have seen, i have been buying parts for a G3 minitower Project. So far, i have on order is a Tower, and a Bezel and Wings card for a desktop. I received my MUCH needed DB15 to HD15 adapter today in the mail. For only $6.53 USD Shipped off of eBay.
After playing with the machine adapter and the machine. I have gotten the internal monitor turned off of the AIO, i have pulled out the personality card, and am booted from the machine, with my Panasonic FlatScreen CRT hooked to the port. albeit i have no sound, but i don't have to worry with just working with 1024x768 Resolutions. I am now at 1152x870. and am loving the res increase. This is all on the original Graphics card at 6MB VRAM total. I got an offer for a 16MB Video card pulled from a B&W, but i don't have any more money available to throw in the project. I hope i can get it one day soon.

Despite all the clutter i have on the desk, the machine works good, and i have the CRT running at 75hz. and it looks really cool. So far so good, now i gotta get the minitower and some other parts.

I will report back on the project...

Fsck'n hackers

Pweb was hit again by that (removed) Hacker. I have posted before about MacForum going down, but this time he went too far. And he shut down Macforums for good. The account got deleted, and everytime we redid the database throughout this whole time, he kept finding a way to get in. This last time, it was DDoS's and shut down not only the SQL system, but is burning up the servers (overheating from the DDoS's) and cause our forum system to get banned. There is no telling what I WANT to do to that person. I certainly would go as far as torture.
I have no idea why someone would want to be malicious enough to even GO after a free web service that is supported by the community. I just hope he's happy, because if I meet him in a dark alley, he certainly wouldn't be any more...

*ugh*

I have been working on a website for the last week with a new ISP Server (pweb.info) and also been contributing to the forum http://macforum.pweb.info/. Recently we have had a bot run thru the system and destroy *almost* every site that was on the server. This means that the macforums site AND most of everyone else (including pweb's OWN forums) sites had their PHP MySQL Databases erased. Most people did not have backups, or if they did on the server that they used for their site, it was wiped too.

I was not hit nearly as hard as the other sites (i didn't use PHP on my site) and Ultimate's was not hit very much.

if you don't know what pweb is, it's a free webserving company that allows you to serve your own webpage for free, with every technology you can cram on the site. And best of all, it's Free!. But... Macforums has been hacked (which was one of the first sites on pweb) several times. Most of them were just the local site. this time, a hacker bot went thru MacForums into the backbone of the server, and as it moved through the server, it deleted PHP databases one-by-one until it had killed every site that was on the server rack.

Even right now, the server is under heavy load as several IP addresses are doing a DDoS on the system. so, the server memory and CPU are red-lineing it.
We are trying to clean up from the aftermath, but are having a hard time. The people who do the serving are really upset and are trying to deal with it. This hacker bot has been moving thru image URL's (i think) to get into the backbone of the system and has been hitting a lot of sites.
(note to applefritter users, if you use mysql/php, you might want to contact me as I can get you additional info on this bot. I talk with the server admins. and *might* be able to get the IP address's of the bot routes)

I will update if anything new happens. Please keep the site servers in your thoughts, as well as the admins that pay for this, as this is a new thing to be serving websites for free WITHOUT ads, and letting people explore site creation without restraints.

this is a utility for any computer that boots to OS 9 to check things like pixels, and to check general hardware. I got it in my last iBook that apple sent back to me after they repaired it. I am hosting it on my own site so if something happens, it will be my problem if someone has a beef about it. Let me know. Give the file about 30 mins to upload from this post. I kinda have a slow connection

you can do the Mugu Marauder:

there is also a web refresher that will load links in your web browser

both of these links are bandwith intensive, and are ONLY recommended if you have unlimited bandwith. These will download large images from the servers of fake banks, and will do it over and over till they show errors. If they pay by the Bytes downloaded, it will give them one hell of a bill. Right now, I am pulling 800KB's+ at a time with my 4 computers

It's amazing

I have had my PC for about 2 yrs now, and have installed a multitude of crap on it and OS's. What really picks at my brain. How do people have so many problems with iTunes under winblows? I have used itunes with 2k, XP, XP SP1, XP SP2, and so forth. I have not had 1 (One) Problem with itunes! I am wondering what in the heck people are doing that causes their iTunes to not work properly on their machines? All my friends have had problems, and I end up trying to fix them. I am just clueless how people with an average PC that does almost nothing browsing email and the web get these "Symptoms" of not having iTunes work on it

Of all people to have the problems, it should be me! I have screwed with my PC over and over and I should be the ones with the problems! But no matter how much I do to my PC, it doesn't do a thing. I just have to wonder what people HAVE to do with their pc to fsck them up that bad?

all in a name...

It just occured to me while searching on the internet. Apparently, my nickname, which is chosen on a Greek titan as a titan of widom, is actually spelled "Coeus". Shoot...

I am also thinking: "have I been living an alternate "Non-Existant" live? have I not been living in the shoes of a god that I have labeled myself in respect for? and If I have, then what makes my name real?"

No wonder all I get when googling "Coius" it comes up with the "Coius Fish." Well, to hell with it. It is the person that printed it on the mythology page that made the Mis-print! I am in NO responsible for the misnaming of the nick-name I have given myself. Now, i just have to lead the life of a fish...

*Sigh*... Sometimes things never go right... I wonder if I'll have to change my name... WAIT!! what If I pave the way for other people who have typo's in their nickname! Then I would be a leader! That's it! I can make other Typo'ists feel proud! I can actually add a feeling to my new name! Then I will be called "Coius, greek titan of leadershi." and all will be good. I will become on-par with the new God I have created. And all will be well...

Thx for the people who have accepted me as I am, typo's and sillyness in all..
G'night everyone!

Installing 10.4 on a Beige G3 AIO

I am now starting the attempt to install OS 10.4 onto a Beige G3 AIO that everyone is familiar with on the forums. I have received on Monday, December 5th, a new PRAM and VRAM Module from macsane (thank-you) The setup goes as follows:
G3 AIO System Bus running at 83.3Mhz
458MHz CPU (Clocked from the 300 that it arrived at.
Rev. 2 Board, and Rev. C ROM
USB 2.0 Belkin Card
LG DVD-Rom Drive
4GB (Original HDD) for Classic
11GB IDE HDD for OS X
256MB Ram
6MB's VRAM
OS X.4 Install DVD
15" Internal CRT

Right now, it is installing Base System 1

The thing is surprisingly Zippy for OS X (I had 10.3 on it) And is going pretty fast. I can drag the Windows in the installer around and it actually keeps up! The DVD-Rom is 16x and both the HDD's and DVD drives are on 33MB's IDE Chain. The DVD and the 4GB HDD are on the secondary Chain. All the Cables for the IDE have been replaced by 80-wire UATA Cables to provide maximum data transfer with the only Bottle necks at eh drives and the MLB. I will keep you posted
